1099 paperwork, all in one place
A record for each freelancer and consultant, marked 1099, with the agreements, certificates and courses that come with the work.
- Agreements and NDAs signed online by both sides
- Insurance certificates flagged when they expire
- Contractors see their own paperwork, never your staff's
Contractors fall between the cracks
They aren't on your payroll, but they sign agreements, carry certificates and log in to your systems.
What's behind those questions
- The signed copy is somewhere in emailThe agreement, the NDA and the statement of work get signed in different places, and someone has to dig for them.
- Certificates lapse quietlyAn insurance certificate or a license runs out on its own date, and nobody notices until someone asks for a current one.
- Treated like staff by defaultA process built for employees hands contractors the same forms and courses. The IRS looks at control, not at the label.

Everything a contractor needs from you, nothing more
Five things every engagement needs, and how FirstHR handles each.
Signed by both sides
Add yourself or the owner as a second signer. The certificate page records who signed, when and from which IP address.
Marked 1099
Each profile records that the person is a 1099 contractor, not an employee.
Every contract has an end date
Add the date the contract ends, and it turns red once it passes.
They see only their own
Their own documents, courses and tasks, in the same portal as everyone else, and nothing of your staff's.
Your agreement, read for risk
The AI check flags clauses that point to control and names the law behind each one.
A contractor's start, set up once
An example plan for a freelance web developer: the agreements, the insurance certificate and the security courses that come with a login. Build it once as a template, then start each contractor from it.
Contractor or employee? How the work runs decides
A signed agreement doesn't make someone a contractor. How the work runs does, and the paperwork follows from it.
- You decide how and when the work gets doneEmployee
- The work is what your business usually doesEmployee
- They run their own business doing this kind of workContractor
- Form I-9Employee
- Form 1099-NEC, once you pay them $2,000 in a yearContractor
Under California's ABC test, someone is a contractor only if all three of the first rows point to Contractor; if one points to Employee, it's employment. Federally, the IRS asks whether you control only the result, or also what is done and how.

The project wrapped months ago, and the contractor can still log in. The agreement you both signed is buried in an email thread. People who aren't on your payroll are the easiest to forget, so here's how I'd keep it simple. In FirstHR each contractor gets a signed agreement and NDA, a current certificate on file and a login that ends when the work does. Less paperwork than an employee, but all of it right.
