Application engineer is one of the least standardized titles in technical hiring. I have seen the same two words describe a person sizing pumps against a chemical process, a person debugging a customer's circuit board in a lab three states away, and a person writing integration code for a software product. Those are three different hires with three different candidate pools.
That ambiguity is why generic templates fail here. Most postings for this role open with a paragraph so broad that it could be a project manager, a support lead, or a developer. The candidates who could actually do your version of the job cannot tell it is their job, and the ones who apply are guessing.

TL;DR
An application engineer makes a product work inside a specific customer situation: capture the requirement, specify the configuration, prove it, support the install, and feed field problems back to engineering. There is no federal occupation code for the title, so pay benchmarks to the nearest classification, from $102,440 for industrial engineers to $135,980 for software developers. Six templates below.
What an Application Engineer Actually Does
An application engineer turns a customer requirement into a working configuration of the company's product. The loop is identical across industries: capture the requirement, specify and size the solution, prove it with a calculation or a trial, support the installation, then carry what failed back to engineering.
What changes between industries is the artifact. In process manufacturing it is a sizing calculation and a scope of supply. In electronics it is a reference design and a schematic review. At a software vendor it is an integration and a migration plan. The judgment being applied is the same; the deliverable is not.

Pumps, drives, instruments, valves, and materials. The application engineer sizes the product against the customer's process conditions and owns the technical content of the quote. Most orders are configured, not picked off a shelf.
Electronics and semiconductors
Design-in support
Here the title is usually Field Application Engineer. The job is winning the design-in at the customer's engineering bench, then keeping that design healthy through qualification and production ramp.
Machine builders and integrators
Scope before it is sold
Every order is a variation. The application engineer defines the process requirement, sizes the mechanics and controls, and makes sure the proposal describes something the shop can actually build for the price quoted.
B2B software vendors
Configuration and integration
The product ships, then someone makes it fit: integrations, data migration, extensions, environment setup. Some vendors call this implementation engineering, others call it application engineering, and the postings look identical.
Write the Posting Around the Artifact, Not the Adjectives
The fastest way to make an application engineer posting specific is to name what the person produces in a typical week. A sizing calculation and a quoted scope of supply. A schematic review and a bring-up report. An integration and a cutover plan. Candidates in this field self-select on deliverables, because the deliverable tells them which of the four versions of this job you are actually hiring. Adjectives like collaborative, detail-oriented, and customer-focused tell them nothing.
Application Engineer vs Sales Engineer vs Support Engineer
The three titles differ by what the role is accountable for, not by how technical it is. A sales engineer is accountable for revenue. A support engineer is accountable for resolving reported issues against a queue and an agreed response time. An application engineer is accountable for whether the application works.
That boundary blurs at small companies, where one person often covers all three. The blurring itself is fine. Leaving it undocumented is not, because the classification analysis and the compensation plan both hang on which duty is primary.

If the role reports into sales with a real quota component, you are writing a sales engineer job description. If it is queue-driven with response-time commitments, you want the technical support engineer templates instead. The application engineer posting is for the role accountable for the technical outcome after the order.
Where the role owns a whole customer architecture rather than the fit of one product, the solution architect templates are the better starting point. Where the role builds the product rather than applying it, use the software engineer job description.
Duties and Responsibilities to List
List duties that describe decisions, not activities. Support the sales team is an activity and tells a candidate nothing. Determine whether a proposed configuration meets the customer's duty cycle, and say no when it does not, describes a decision, and it filters correctly.

Is an Application Engineer Exempt or Non-Exempt?
Most application engineers are exempt as learned professionals, but the exemption comes from duties and never from the title. The federal rule on learned professionals requires a primary duty of work requiring advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
The salary level for the standard exemptions is $684 per week, which is $35,568 a year. The 2024 rule that would have raised it was vacated in federal court and formally rescinded, so the older threshold stands. The highly compensated employee test sits at $107,432 in total annual compensation with a reduced duties requirement.
The learned professional test is the usual home
Most application engineers are exempt as learned professionals. The federal regulation asks three things: the primary duty is work requiring advanced knowledge, that knowledge is in a field of science or learning, and it is customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. An engineering degree applied to real engineering judgment clears all three comfortably. Two places it breaks. First, a strong technician promoted into an applications seat without a degree or an equivalent course of specialized instruction may not clear the third element on the strength of experience alone. Second, a role whose day is quote processing, order entry, and configurator clicking is not applying advanced knowledge, whatever the business card says. Software roles have a second, hourly-friendly path
The computer employee exemption is the one common white-collar exemption with an hourly route. It covers computer systems analysts, programmers, software engineers, and similarly skilled workers who meet a specific duties test and are paid either on a salary basis at the standard salary level or on an hourly basis at not less than $27.63 an hour. The duties test is narrow and concrete: systems analysis techniques including consulting with users to determine specifications, or the design, development, documentation, testing, and modification of systems or programs. Employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware are excluded outright. If your software application engineer spends most of the time on configuration screens rather than analysis and code, look hard at the duties before claiming it. Travel time is where field roles go wrong
For an exempt application engineer, travel time is not a pay question. For anyone non-exempt on the same team, it is one of the most reliably mishandled areas in small technical companies. Travel that cuts across the normal working hours is generally compensable, including on days off, while ordinary home-to-work commuting is not, and the treatment of overnight trips and travel outside normal hours follows specific rules. Add pre-shift and post-shift work at customer sites, staging equipment, and remote troubleshooting from a hotel room and the exposure grows quickly. Decide the classification before the first trip, write the travel and expense policy into the posting so candidates can price the job honestly, and give any non-exempt field staff a real way to record hours from the road. Commission does not create an exemption
Paying an application engineer a bonus or commission tied to team revenue does not make the role exempt, and it does not turn the role into outside sales. The outside sales exemption is a separate test with its own requirements: making sales must be the primary duty, and the employee must be customarily and regularly engaged away from the employer's place of business. An application engineer who supports a salesperson, specifies the configuration, and gets a slice of the number is being paid variable compensation for professional work, not selling as a primary duty. Pick the exemption the actual work satisfies, document the reasoning once, and state the base and the variable structure separately in the posting and the offer letter so nobody is guessing. Software-side roles have a second option. The computer employee exemption and the Department of Labor guidance in Fact Sheet 17E allow either the standard salary level on a salary basis or an hourly rate of at least $27.63, with a narrow duties test built around systems analysis and program design. The Technician-to-Applications Promotion Is the Classic Trap
The most common misclassification in this role is the excellent service technician promoted into an applications seat, handed a salary, and marked exempt on the strength of the new title. The learned professional test asks whether the advanced knowledge is customarily acquired through a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. Deep experience alone does not automatically satisfy that element, and the person is often still doing installation and repair for a large share of the year. Run the duties test on the actual assignment before the title changes, not after a complaint.
What to Pay an Application Engineer
There is no federal occupation code called application engineer, so a single national median for the title does not exist. Benchmark against the nearest classifications and pick the one that matches the actual work, because the spread between them is wide enough to matter.
The closest official home for the customer-facing version is Sales Engineers, code 41-9031, whose federal occupational profile lists Sales Applications Engineer among its reported job titles. Industrial and machinery roles sit closer to mechanical or industrial engineering, and software roles to software development.

Demand supports the upper half of those ranges. Bureau of Labor Statistics employment projections for 2024 to 2034 put sales engineers at faster than average growth, and both software developers and industrial engineers at much faster than average. Publish a good-faith base range wherever pay transparency laws apply, and state any bonus or commission component separately so a candidate can read the base honestly.

The degree requirement deserves a deliberate decision rather than a copied line. An engineering degree is the cleanest path to the learned professional exemption and a genuine proxy for analytical training. Interview for judgment with one real problem from a past customer, including the parts you did not know at the time. Ask what the candidate would specify, what they would refuse to commit to, and what they would need to measure first. That single question separates applications thinking from product knowledge better than a full technical screen.
Hiring an Application Engineer Without an HR Department
Small technical companies fail at this hire in three predictable places: the posting describes the founder, the job is secretly three jobs, and the onboarding paperwork lands on whoever did the hiring. Each has a fix that costs nothing but honesty in the posting.
The role only exists because your founder or lead engineer is the bottleneck
At most small technical companies the first application engineer is hired because one person, usually the founder or the principal engineer, is the only one who can answer whether the product will work in a given customer situation. Every quote waits on that person. The posting that comes out of this is often a wish list describing the founder, which attracts nobody, because nobody else has spent ten years with your product. Write the posting for the person who can carry sixty percent of that knowledge in a year, and be explicit about what they will be handed: the standards that exist, the ones they will have to write, and who they can escalate to while they learn. Candidates read that as honesty about the ramp, which is exactly what a strong applications person wants to know before saying yes.
The job description is really three jobs wearing one title
Small companies bundle. The posting says application engineer, and the actual assignment is pre-sales support plus implementation plus escalated customer support plus a share of product documentation. Bundling is not the mistake; hiding it is. A candidate who discovers the support queue in month two leaves in month six, and you restart a search that already took four months.
