Assistant Brand Manager Job Description Templates

6 free templates for the support tier of a brand team: standard, CPG, associate, DTC, agency, and the entry rung below. With pay benchmarks and an honest overtime note. Download as DOCX.

Most assistant brand manager postings I read are one of two things. Either they are a brand manager job description with the salary halved and the word assistant pasted in front, or they are a list of chores the founder wants off their desk, in the order they thought of them. The first attracts people who will leave in eight months. The second attracts nobody worth hiring.

The role sits inside a large and competitive hiring pool. The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups support-level brand roles with market research analysts and marketing specialists, an occupation projected to grow 7 percent between 2024 and 2034 with roughly 87,200 openings a year on average. You are not posting into a quiet market, and a vague posting gets skipped.

At FirstHR we write hiring templates for companies without a marketing department to borrow from, let alone an HR one. The six below cover a standard assistant brand manager, a consumer goods version, an associate brand manager, a direct-to-consumer version, an agency version, and the coordinator rung underneath, each with the classification note the generic versions leave out.

TL;DR
An assistant brand manager owns one named workstream and supports the brand manager on the rest. Classification turns on duties, not the title: analysis and recommendations can fit the administrative exemption, pure execution cannot. Benchmark pay between the 25th percentile and median of the BLS analyst and specialist band. Six templates below, downloadable as DOCX.

What an Assistant Brand Manager Actually Owns

An assistant brand manager owns a defined slice of the brand outright and supports the brand manager on everything else. That split is the whole job, and it is the sentence most postings never write. Without it, candidates cannot tell whether they are being hired to think or to fetch.

The owned slice should be small and real: one sub-brand, one channel, one product line, or one recurring campaign, with a calendar and a number attached. The support half is broader and shallower, covering annual planning, campaign development, research, and the cross-functional traffic that brand work generates.

Brand Marketing Assistant
Executes under direction
Assets, calendars, reporting inputs, vendor logistics. Almost always non-exempt. Hire here when the problem is that things fall through, not that nobody is thinking about the brand.
Assistant Brand Manager
Owns a slice, supports the rest
One named workstream owned outright plus support on the wider brand. The first rung where the person is expected to bring an answer, not just the data behind it.
Associate Brand Manager
Owns a number
In consumer goods this is a distinct rung above assistant, with budget accountability and a sub-brand or line to deliver. Many companies use the two titles interchangeably. Decide which you mean before you post.
Brand Manager
Owns the brand
Strategy, positioning, the full plan, and usually the P&L. If this is what you actually need, the assistant posting will attract candidates who cannot do it and repel the ones who can.
Name the Owned Workstream in the First Paragraph
Pick the one thing this hire owns end to end and put it in the position summary, not buried in bullet fourteen. A candidate deciding whether to apply is looking for evidence that the role has a shape. One owned workstream plus a support list reads as a job with a future. A support list alone reads as a queue, and the strongest early-career candidates have learned to skip those.

Assistant Brand Manager vs Brand Manager

The difference is authority, not effort. A brand manager sets positioning, owns the annual plan and the budget, and in consumer goods carries the P&L. An assistant brand manager executes inside that plan with judgment, owning one workstream and recommending rather than deciding on the rest.

Use the table below to check which posting you actually need. If more than half of the middle column describes what you want, you need the brand manager templates instead, priced accordingly.

DimensionBrand ManagerAssistant Brand Manager
Positioning and strategySets it and defends itContributes inputs and executes it
Annual planOwns the whole planOwns one workstream inside it
BudgetOwns and allocates the brand budgetManages spend within an approved line
P&L accountabilityYes, in most consumer goods rolesNo, contributes to the analysis behind it
Agency and vendorsSets the scope and the relationshipRuns the day to day and the timelines
ResearchDecides what to answer and acts on itRuns it, synthesizes it, presents it
PeopleOften manages an assistant or associateUsually none, sometimes an intern
Typical experience5 or more years1 to 3 years

One more distinction worth settling before you post: assistant and associate are different rungs in most consumer goods companies and interchangeable in most small ones. Decide which you mean, because candidates from a large-company ladder read them as separate jobs with separate pay.

What Belongs in the Posting

A good assistant brand manager posting does four jobs: it defines the shape of the role, it sets expectations about the team and the tools, it protects you legally, and it closes the candidate. Most postings only do the last one, and they do it with adjectives.

The part almost every posting skips
One workstream the hire owns outright, named
Who owns the rest of the brand
What decisions this role makes alone
What has to be approved and by whom
The part that sets expectations
Team size and where the role sits in it
Channels and categories in scope
Reporting cadence and who reads the report
Tools already in place
The part that protects you
FLSA classification stated on the posting
Essential functions written plainly
Equal opportunity statement
Travel and after-hours expectations, honestly
The part that wins the hire
Salary range in good faith
What the promotion path actually requires
Budget the role touches
A named person and a real deadline to apply

The single most common omission is decision rights. Candidates at this level want to know what they can decide alone and what needs sign-off, because that answer tells them whether the job is a step up or a step sideways. Our guide to writing a job description covers the general structure, and the hiring templates library has the adjacent roles if you are staffing a whole team.

the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of
significance may qualify for the FLSA administrative exemption. One whose primary
duty is executing instructions, formatting decks, and scheduling posts generally
does not, and is non-exempt: hourly or salaried non-exempt, with overtime past 40
hours in a week. Decide on the actual day. This is general information, not legal
advice.

accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

brand you think is positioned well and why.

Template 2: Assistant Brand Manager, CPG

For a packaged goods brand: category and retail measurement data, trade promotion analysis, packaging projects through claims review, and the item setup workflow that decides whether a new product reaches the shelf on time.

Assistant Brand Manager, CPG / Consumer Goods

ABOUT THE BRAND

[Company Name] makes [product category] sold in [grocery / mass / club /

$_ in annual revenue. We are hiring an Assistant Brand Manager to work
the business day to day alongside the Brand Manager who owns the P&L.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Brand Manager supports a consumer packaged goods brand across
pricing, promotion, packaging, and shelf performance, builds the analysis behind
the decisions, and runs the projects that keep the calendar moving.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Track category and brand performance using [syndicated data source] and
retailer portals, and turn it into a monthly read the team acts on
Support pricing and trade promotion analysis: what ran, what lifted, what it
cost, what to repeat
Manage packaging and label projects through design, legal, claims review, and
the printer, on the launch date
Own the item setup and maintenance workflow with [sales / operations] so new
items actually reach the shelf
Support innovation projects from concept through first shipment
Coordinate the [broker / distributor / retail] materials the sales team needs
Maintain the brand forecast inputs with [demand planning]

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[1 to 3] years in CPG brand, category management, trade marketing, or sales
Working knowledge of retail measurement data and how to read a category
Strong spreadsheet skills: you build the model, not just read it
Project management through many hand-offs, including with outside vendors
Bachelor's degree [required / preferred / not required]

NICE TO HAVE

Experience in the [category] and with [named retailer type]
Exposure to trade spend planning and deduction reconciliation
Familiarity with packaging regulatory review in [our category]

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

Classify on duties, not on the title or the bonus plan. An assistant brand
manager whose primary duty includes analysis and recommendations that shape
pricing, promotion, and assortment decisions is a stronger candidate for the
FLSA administrative exemption than one whose primary duty is data entry and
report formatting. The salary basis floor is $684 per week, but clearing it does
not by itself create an exemption. This is general information, not legal advice.

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

Direct reports: [None / one Assistant Brand Manager / one intern]
Employment type: Full-time
Salary range: $_____ to $_____ per year, plus [bonus target]

ABOUT THIS ROLE

At [Company Name] the Associate Brand Manager is a step above assistant: you
carry a piece of the business with a number attached to it, and you are expected
to bring the recommendation rather than wait for it. This is the role we promote
into Brand Manager from.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Brand Manager owns [a sub-brand / a product line / a channel] with
accountability for its volume, spend, and marketing plan, and leads the
cross-functional work required to deliver it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own the annual plan for [sub-brand or line]: objectives, budget, calendar

them, and defend the recommendation in the room
Lead campaign development with [agency / in-house creative] from brief to

independent ownership of a workstream
Track record of a recommendation you made that changed a decision
Fluency with performance data and the ability to explain it to non-marketers
Budget ownership experience
Bachelor's degree [required / preferred / not required]; [MBA preferred where
that genuinely reflects your ladder, otherwise delete this line]

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

An associate brand manager with genuine budget authority, independent ownership
of a workstream, and recommendations that shape business decisions is a
straightforward fit for the FLSA administrative exemption, which requires salary
basis pay of at least $684 per week plus a primary duty involving the exercise of
discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. Keep
a written record of what the role actually decides. This is general information,
not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

brand decision you owned and what it produced.

Template 4: Assistant Brand Manager, DTC and E-commerce

For online-first brands where brand and performance overlap: product pages, creative briefing, the promotional calendar, and weekly revenue reporting. If the role skews further toward channels than brand, compare it against the digital marketing specialist templates.

Assistant Brand Manager, DTC / E-commerce
ASSISTANT BRAND MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (DTC / E-COMMERCE)
Company: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Brand Manager / Head of Growth / Founder]
Employment type: Full-time, [on-site / hybrid / remote]
Salary range: $_____ to $_____ per year

ABOUT [COMPANY NAME]

[Company Name] sells [product category] direct to consumers through
[our site / marketplaces / retail media] at [revenue scale]. We are hiring an
Assistant Brand Manager to keep the brand coherent while the growth team moves
fast, and to own the parts of the funnel where brand and performance meet.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Brand Manager owns product detail pages, brand creative
consistency, lifecycle messaging, and the reporting that connects brand activity
to revenue, working between the growth, creative, and merchandising functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own product page content, imagery, and copy across [site / marketplaces], and
keep it accurate as the catalog changes
Brief and traffic creative for [paid social, email, lifecycle, retail media]
and keep every asset on brand
Run the promotional calendar: what is offered, when, and where it appears
Report weekly on [traffic, conversion, AOV, repeat rate, contribution margin]
and say what changed rather than only what happened
Manage [reviews, user-generated content, community responses] against brand
voice standards
Support launches: naming, packaging copy, page build, launch checklist
Keep the brand kit current for [agency, retail partners, affiliates]

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[1 to 3] years in e-commerce, brand, or growth marketing
Hands-on with [e-commerce platform] and [analytics platform]
Copy judgment: you can fix a headline, not only route it
Comfortable owning a calendar that changes weekly
Bachelor's degree [required / preferred / not required]

NICE TO HAVE

Marketplace or retail media experience
Lifecycle and retention messaging experience
Basic design or photo direction skills

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

DTC assistant roles blur into coordination quickly, and classification should
follow the reality. If the primary duty is executing a calendar someone else
sets, treat the role as non-exempt, track hours, and pay overtime past 40 in a
week. If the role genuinely decides what runs, on what claim, at what price, the
administrative exemption may fit. The salary basis floor is $684 per week. This
is general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Salary range: $_____ to $_____ per year, [benefits]
To apply, email __ with your resume and a link to a product
page you would rewrite, plus what you would change.

Template 5: Assistant Brand Manager, Agency

For agency teams supporting several clients at once, with scope tracking, client reporting, and an honest note about the overtime exposure that pitch and launch weeks create.

Assistant Brand Manager, Agency / Multi-Client
ASSISTANT BRAND MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (AGENCY / MULTI-CLIENT)
Agency: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Account Director / Brand Director]
Clients supported: [number], across [categories]
Employment type: Full-time
Salary range: $_____ to $_____ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Agency Name] runs brand marketing for [number] clients in [categories]. The
Assistant Brand Manager supports [number] accounts at once, which means the job
is as much about switching context cleanly as it is about brand craft.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Brand Manager supports client brand programs across strategy
inputs, campaign execution, reporting, and day-to-day client communication,
keeping each account on scope, on timeline, and on brand.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Support [number] client accounts with plans, briefs, and status
Write and circulate meeting notes, recaps, and next steps the same day
Build monthly client performance reports and flag what needs a decision
Manage timelines across creative, media, and production
Track scope and hours against the retainer and raise overruns early
Keep client brand guidelines applied consistently across deliverables
Prepare research inputs: category, competitor, audience

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[1 to 3] years agency or client-side marketing experience
Ability to hold [number] accounts in your head without dropping a deadline
Clear, quick written communication with clients
Comfort with performance reporting across channels
Bachelor's degree [required / preferred / not required]

NICE TO HAVE

Experience in [client category]
Familiarity with [project management tool] and time tracking discipline
Production or media coordination exposure

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

Agency assistant roles carry real overtime exposure because the hours spike
around pitches and launches. If the role is non-exempt, you owe overtime past 40
hours in a week and you need an accurate record of hours, including work done
after hours on a phone. If you intend to treat the role as exempt under the
administrative exemption, confirm both parts: salary basis of at least $684 per
week and a primary duty involving discretion and independent judgment on matters
of significance. This is general information, not legal advice.

[Agency Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

Template 6: Brand Marketing Assistant

The rung below, written honestly as a non-exempt hourly role with a written growth path. If the job is broader than brand, the marketing coordinator templates fit better.

Brand Marketing Assistant / Coordinator (Entry Rung)
BRAND MARKETING ASSISTANT / COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Company: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Brand Manager / Assistant Brand Manager]
Employment type: [Full-time / Part-time]
FLSA status: Non-exempt (hourly, overtime-eligible)
Pay: $_ per hour

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] is hiring a Brand Marketing Assistant to keep brand operations
running: assets, calendars, reporting inputs, and the small tasks that stall a
campaign when nobody owns them. This is the rung below Assistant Brand Manager
and it is a real path into one.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Brand Marketing Assistant executes brand marketing tasks under direction:
maintaining assets and calendars, pulling reporting data, coordinating vendors,
and supporting campaigns as they run.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain the asset library, brand kit, and version control
Keep the marketing calendar current and chase missing inputs
Pull data for weekly and monthly reports from [named systems]
Schedule and publish content per an approved calendar
Proof deliverables against brand guidelines and flag anything off
Handle vendor logistics: samples, shipping, print orders, invoices
Support events and trade shows: materials, lists, follow-up

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[0 to 2] years of experience; internships count
Organized to the point of being slightly annoying about deadlines
Solid written English and careful proofreading
Comfortable in [spreadsheet tool] and [project tool]
Bachelor's degree [preferred / not required]

GROWTH PATH

We review this role at [6 / 12] months against a written list of what an
Assistant Brand Manager owns here. [Name the two or three things that must be
true for the promotion.]

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

This role is non-exempt: the primary duty is executing under direction rather
than exercising discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance,
so it does not fit the FLSA administrative exemption regardless of whether it is
paid hourly or on a salary. Track all hours worked, including evening and weekend
work on a phone, and pay overtime past 40 hours in a week. Paying a flat salary
does not remove the overtime obligation. This is general information, not legal
advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Pay: $_ per hour, [overtime policy], [benefits], [review cadence]

Exempt or Non-Exempt at the Assistant Level

An assistant brand manager can be exempt or non-exempt, and the title decides nothing. Classification turns on the FLSA administrative exemption test, which requires salary basis pay of at least $684 per week plus a primary duty involving the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.

Both parts of the administrative exemption regulation have to be satisfied at the same time. The salary floor is easy to clear at this pay level, which is exactly why employers stop reading there and misclassify the role. The Department of Labor sets out the duties half in Fact Sheet 17C, and it is the half that decides most assistant-level cases.

The title decides nothing
There is no exemption for assistants, none for anyone with manager in the title, and none for salaried marketing staff as a class. The administrative exemption has two parts, and both have to be true at once: the employee is paid on a salary basis at a rate of at least $684 per week, and the primary duty is office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of the employer, including the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. An assistant brand manager who clears the salary floor still fails the test if the day is execution. This is general information, not legal advice.
What discretion and independent judgment means here
The Department of Labor describes it as comparing and evaluating possible courses of action and then making a decision, free from immediate supervision. Applied to brand work, that is the difference between recommending a price change and processing one, between choosing what the campaign says and formatting the deck that says it, between deciding which items to keep and pulling the report on which items sold. Write down which of those your role does before you classify it. If the honest answer is mostly the second half of each pair, the role is non-exempt.
Salary does not switch off overtime
Paying a flat annual figure to a non-exempt employee is legal, and it changes nothing about overtime. You still owe time and a half past 40 hours in a workweek, calculated on the regular rate, and you still need an accurate record of hours worked. This is where assistant-level marketing roles get expensive: launch weeks, trade show weeks, and pitch weeks run long, and the hours are real whether or not anyone wrote them down. If you classify the role as non-exempt, set up time tracking on day one rather than reconstructing it later.
State rules can sit above the federal floor
The $684 per week federal salary level is a floor, not a ceiling. Several states set a higher salary threshold for exempt status, some apply a stricter duties test than the federal one, and a few require daily overtime past eight hours rather than only weekly overtime past forty. A classification that is defensible under federal law can still be wrong in your state. Check your state labor agency before you finalize the posting, and re-check when you hire into a new state, which happens the first time you make a remote hire.

If the honest reading is that the role executes rather than decides, classify it as non-exempt, track hours from day one, and pay overtime past forty in a week. Our breakdown of exempt versus non-exempt classification works through the full set of tests, including the executive and professional exemptions that occasionally get misapplied to marketing roles.

A Promotion Can Change the Classification
The classification you set at hire is not permanent. When a coordinator picks up budget authority, or an assistant starts making recommendations that change what the company charges and stocks, the duties test can flip. Re-check the classification at every promotion and at every meaningful scope change, and write down what changed. Reconstructing the reasoning two years later, during a wage claim, is a much worse experience than spending ten minutes on it now.

What to Pay an Assistant Brand Manager

There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for assistant brand manager, so any single national figure you see for the title comes from self-reported market data rather than a government survey. The defensible approach is to benchmark against the two federal classifications the role sits between.

The Two Classifications the Role Sits Between
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists had a national median annual wage of $78,760, with a 25th percentile of $58,350 and a 10th percentile of $43,390. Marketing Managers had a median of $166,790 and a 10th percentile of $90,260 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS national estimates). Most assistant brand manager roles benchmark between the 25th percentile and the median of the first band.
BLS classification (OEWS, May 2025)10th percentileMedianHow it applies to this role
Market research analysts and marketing specialists$43,390$78,760Closest fit for assistant and coordinator level brand roles
Advertising and promotions managers$63,300$133,660Relevant once the role owns campaign budgets outright
Marketing managers$90,260$166,790The manager tier the assistant role reports into

Reading those together gives a usable range. A coordinator or entry-level brand assistant benchmarks near the 10th to 25th percentile of the analyst and specialist band, an assistant brand manager between the 25th percentile and the median, and an associate brand manager with budget accountability at or above that median, with consumer goods hubs and high cost metros pushing every band upward.

Publish the range. A growing number of states require it, and even where pay transparency laws do not apply, a posted range cuts the number of conversations that end at the salary question. Set it against comparable local employers of your size rather than against the national median for the manager tier, which describes a different job.

Screening for the Right Signals

Screen this role on a written exercise rather than another conversation. Assistant brand manager work is mostly briefs, recaps, and analysis, so thirty minutes of someone’s actual writing predicts performance better than two interviews about their strengths.

Three exercises work well, and all of them take a candidate under an hour. Ask for a one-page read on a category using data you supply. Ask them to rewrite one of your own product pages and say what they changed and why. Or hand them a messy set of campaign results and ask what they would do next.

SignalHow to test itWhat a weak answer looks like
JudgmentAsk for a recommendation, not an analysisPresents the data and stops before the conclusion
NumeracyGive raw results and ask what happenedRestates the numbers without interpreting them
WritingRequest a one-page brief or recapLong, hedged, no clear ask or next step
OwnershipAsk what they ran alone and what it producedDescribes team work with no personal contribution
Brand senseAsk which brand is positioned well and whyNames a brand they like without a reason
Follow-throughAsk how they track parallel deadlinesNo system, relies on being reminded

Interview for the gap between the owned workstream and the support list, since that is where new hires fail. Someone strong at execution but uncomfortable making a call will stall the moment you hand them the workstream, and that shows up in the exercise long before it shows up on the job.

Hiring an Assistant Brand Manager Without an HR Department

Small-company hiring for this role fails in three predictable places: the posting has no shape, the title ladder is invented at the last minute, and onboarding lands on whoever ran the search. Each has a cheap fix.

You are hiring an assistant because you are underwater, and the posting shows it
The most common assistant brand manager posting is a list of everything the founder or the brand manager wants off their plate, in the order they thought of it. Candidates read that as a role with no shape, and the strong ones assume they will spend a year on whatever is loudest that week. The fix costs twenty minutes: pick one workstream, name it in the posting, and say the hire owns it outright. A single owned thing plus a support list reads as a job. A support list alone reads as a queue. It also gives you something to evaluate against at the six month mark, which is when you find out whether you hired an owner or an assistant.
Your title ladder does not exist yet, so the title is doing all the work
In a small company the difference between coordinator, assistant, and associate is usually invented at the moment of posting, and then it sticks for years. Decide it deliberately instead. Write down what the role decides alone, what budget it touches, and what has to be true before it becomes a brand manager. Put the promotion criteria in the posting if you have them, because an early-career candidate weighing two offers will pick the one that says what the next step requires. Vague growth language is the least credible sentence in any small-company job description, and every candidate has read it a hundred times.
The paperwork and the first ninety days land on whoever hired them
With no HR function, the person who ran the search also runs onboarding, usually badly, because it is a pile rather than a process: offer letter, signed agreements, tax and eligibility forms, tool access, brand training, and the first-ninety-day plan that nobody writes down. FirstHR was built for that situation. The AI onboarding wizard runs the same sequence for every hire, built-in e-signature handles the offer and the agreements, training modules deliver brand and product orientation before week one, and task workflows keep the ninety day plan visible to both of you instead of living in someone's head. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.

Once the offer is accepted, the work becomes a repeatable sequence rather than a scramble. Start from a clean offer letter template, then run the standard onboarding checklist so the paperwork, the access, and the first-ninety-day plan happen in the same order for every hire. Getting that right is also the cheapest employer branding you will ever do, because early-career hires talk to their peers about their first two weeks.

Key Takeaways
An assistant brand manager owns one named workstream outright and supports the brand manager on the rest, and the posting has to state which workstream that is.
Assistant and associate are separate rungs in most consumer goods companies and interchangeable in most small ones, so define the level by decision rights and budget rather than by the title.
Classification turns on duties: the FLSA administrative exemption needs salary basis pay of at least $684 per week plus discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, and pure execution roles are non-exempt.
Paying a flat salary to a non-exempt marketing employee does not remove the obligation to track hours and pay overtime past forty in a workweek.
There is no BLS occupation for this title, so benchmark between the 25th percentile ($58,350) and the median ($78,760) of market research analysts and marketing specialists, OEWS May 2025.
Screen on a written exercise rather than another interview, because briefs, recaps, and analysis are what the job actually produces.
The job description is the easy half. FirstHR runs everything after the yes: e-signature for the offer and agreements, an onboarding sequence that is identical for every hire, training modules for brand and product orientation, and task workflows that keep the first ninety days visible to both of you. Frequently Asked Questions

What does an assistant brand manager do?

An assistant brand manager owns a defined slice of a brand and supports the brand manager on the rest. In practice the owned slice is one sub-brand, one channel, one product line, or one recurring campaign, and it comes with a calendar, a budget, and a result the person reports on. The support half covers annual planning, campaign development, consumer and competitor research, packaging and claims review, and the cross-functional work with sales, product, and finance. The role is also usually the team’s custodian of the brand guidelines and the asset library, which sounds administrative until a product page or a retail sell sheet goes out wrong. The dividing line against a coordinator is judgment: an assistant brand manager is expected to arrive with a recommendation, not only with the data behind one.

What is the difference between an assistant brand manager and a brand manager?

Scope and accountability. A brand manager owns the brand: positioning, the annual plan, the budget, and in consumer goods usually the P&L for the business. An assistant brand manager owns one named workstream inside that plan and supports everything else, without final authority over strategy or the full budget. The practical test is who defends the plan in the room. If you need someone to set direction, hire a brand manager and write that posting instead. If you have direction and need execution with judgment attached, the assistant role is correct. Getting this wrong is expensive in both directions: an assistant posting will not attract someone who can set strategy, and a brand manager posting priced at an assistant salary will attract nobody at all.

Is an assistant brand manager the same as an associate brand manager?

Not in most consumer goods companies, and yes in most small ones. In a traditional CPG ladder, assistant brand manager is the pre-promotion rung focused on analysis and project execution, while associate brand manager is a step up with budget accountability and a sub-brand or line to deliver, often the rung that feeds directly into brand manager. Outside that world the two titles are frequently used interchangeably, which is why candidates cannot infer seniority from either one. Decide which you mean before you post, then define it in the job description by what the role decides alone and what budget it touches rather than by the title itself. Both templates are on this page so you can pick the one that matches the job you are actually filling.

How much does an assistant brand manager make?

There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called assistant brand manager, so the honest answer is a benchmark rather than a single figure. The closest classification for support-level brand roles is Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, where the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025) reported a national median of $78,760 per year, a 25th percentile of $58,350, and a 10th percentile of $43,390. The manager tier sits far above it: Marketing Managers had a median of $166,790 with a 10th percentile of $90,260. Most assistant brand manager roles benchmark between the 25th percentile and the median of the analyst and specialist band, moving up in consumer goods hubs and high cost metros. Set your range against comparable local employers of your size, then publish it.

Is an assistant brand manager exempt or non-exempt?

It depends on duties, not on the title, and both answers are common. Under the FLSA administrative exemption an employee must be paid on a salary basis of at least $684 per week and have a primary duty of office or non-manual work directly related to management or general business operations that includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. An assistant brand manager who analyzes performance and makes recommendations that shape pricing, promotion, or assortment decisions can fit. One whose primary duty is executing an approved calendar, formatting reports, and coordinating vendors generally does not, and is non-exempt: overtime is owed past 40 hours in a workweek regardless of whether pay is hourly or salaried. Several states apply a higher salary threshold or a stricter duties test, so check your state as well.

What qualifications should I require for an assistant brand manager?

Keep the required list short and make it about evidence rather than credentials. One to three years in brand, marketing, category management, or an adjacent commercial function covers most hires, and internships plus a demonstrable side project can substitute at the low end. Require real spreadsheet and reporting ability, because the job dies without it, and require clear written communication, since a brief and a recap are the two documents this role produces most. Treat a bachelor’s degree as preferred rather than required unless it genuinely predicts performance in your business, and treat category experience the same way. Everything else belongs under nice to have. A long required list at assistant level mostly filters out capable early-career candidates who would have been excellent, while doing nothing to filter out the wrong ones.

How do I hire an assistant brand manager without an HR department?

Run a short fixed sequence and write it down once so you can repeat it. Post a job description that names the one workstream the hire owns, states the salary range, and states the classification. Screen on a written exercise rather than another conversation: a one-page category read, a campaign recap, or a rewrite of one of your own product pages tells you more in thirty minutes than two interviews. Check references with the person who reviewed their work, not the person who liked them. Then make the offer quickly, because early-career marketing candidates usually hold several processes at once and speed is a small employer’s real advantage. FirstHR handles what comes after the yes: offer and agreement e-signature, the onboarding sequence, brand training modules, and a visible first-ninety-day plan.
