Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description Templates

6 free templates for the businesses hiring one person to build an organic lead engine: B2B in-house, senior team lead, first marketing hire, ecommerce, agency side, and contract consultant. Download as DOCX.

Inbound marketing manager is a job title that names a methodology instead of a scope. That sounds like a small distinction until you post the role and read the applications. Every candidate describes the same funnel, quotes the same certification, and uses the same four verbs, and none of it tells you whether the person has ever taken a page from position eleven to position three.

The confusion runs in both directions. I have watched a founder hire an inbound marketing manager expecting an organic traffic engine, then spend the first quarter asking why nobody was running ads. The candidate was excellent at the job they were hired for. It was simply not the job the founder had in mind when writing the posting.

At FirstHR we build hiring templates for the companies doing this without a marketing department or an HR department. The six below cover a B2B in-house manager, a senior team lead, a first marketing hire, an ecommerce version, an agency account lead, and a contract consultant scope of work, each with the classification and compliance notes the generic versions leave out.

TL;DR
An inbound marketing manager owns earned and owned channels: search, content, conversion paths, and lifecycle email. The title names a methodology, so the posting has to name the actual channels. Marketing Managers had a median of $166,790 and marketing specialists $78,760 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Six templates below, downloadable as DOCX.

What the Role Actually Owns

An inbound marketing manager owns the channels that earn attention rather than buy it, and the systems that convert that attention into contactable, qualified leads. In practice that means organic search, on-site content, landing pages and forms, and the lifecycle email that runs after a form fill.

The reason the title creates so much confusion is that four genuinely different jobs hide underneath it. Which one you are hiring changes the candidate profile, the salary, and the metric you judge them on. Decide before you write a word of the posting.

The search and content engine
Organic traffic is the job
Keyword research, editorial calendar, page structure, internal linking, and refresh cycles. Success is qualified organic sessions and the conversions behind them. This version overlaps heavily with a content marketing manager and needs a writer or an editor in the room.
The lifecycle and database owner
Everything after the form fill
Nurture sequences, segmentation, list hygiene, consent records, and lead scoring. Success is conversion rate from lead to opportunity. This version carries real compliance duty, because the person owns your commercial email.
The full-funnel first hire
One person, no department
Strategy, website, content, email, reporting, and the budget, all owned by one person reporting to a founder. Success is a first repeatable lead source. The main failure mode is asking for every channel at once.
The agency account lead
Client results, not company results
A portfolio of client programs, a utilization target, and scope discipline as the core skill. Success is retention and renewals. Candidates from this background are strong at process and weaker at operating inside one business.
Name the Channels You Are Not Doing
The strongest signal you can put in an inbound posting is a short list of channels the role does not own. It tells experienced candidates that you have made decisions, it prevents the month-six conversation about the channels nobody had time for, and it filters out generalists who would rather touch everything shallowly. Two or three owned channels, one success metric, and an explicit list of deferred channels beats a nine-item wish list every time.

Inbound Against the Titles Next to It

Inbound sits in a crowded neighborhood of marketing titles that overlap heavily at small companies and separate cleanly only at larger ones. The practical difference between them is the channel mix and the metric, not the seniority.

TitleWhat it usually ownsPrimary metric
Inbound marketing managerSearch, content, conversion paths, lifecycle emailQualified leads from earned and owned channels
Content marketing managerEditorial strategy, production, distribution, brand voicePublished output, organic reach, engagement
Demand generation managerPipeline across all channels, including paid mediaSourced pipeline and cost per opportunity
Digital marketing managerThe full digital mix: site, paid, social, email, analyticsBlended acquisition performance
Email marketing managerSending program, deliverability, segmentation, automationRevenue and conversions per send
Marketing operations managerSystems, data, routing, attribution, reportingData quality and process reliability
First marketing hireEverything, chosen down to two or three channelsOne repeatable lead source

If the person will be handed an ad budget, you are hiring demand generation and should use the demand generation templates instead. If the mandate is production quality and editorial strategy, the content marketing manager templates fit better.

What Belongs in the Posting

An inbound marketing job description does four jobs at once: it sets the scope, it filters unqualified applicants, it protects you legally, and it closes the candidate. Most postings only attempt the first two, which is why they attract volume without fit.

The parts that set the scope
Which channels the role owns, listed by name
Which channels it does not own
Who writes and who edits the content
The tools the role will inherit, by category
The parts that filter applicants
Years of hands-on work, not years of exposure
Whether the person builds workflows or requests them
Writing samples or a portfolio requirement
Budget size and team size, stated honestly
The parts that protect you
FLSA classification stated on the posting
Email and disclosure duties written into the role
Essential functions in plain language
Equal opportunity statement
The parts that win the hire
Salary or a good-faith range
The single metric the role is judged on
Who the role reports to and how often
A named contact and a real decision timeline

The most common omission is the metric. Candidates want to know what number they will be judged on and how long they have before that judgment starts. Leaving it out reads as a company that has not decided, and the people you most want to hire treat that as a risk. Our guide to writing a job description covers the general structure in more depth.

Template 1: Inbound Marketing Manager, B2B In-House

The standard version: search, content, conversion paths, and lifecycle email owned by one person reporting into marketing or straight to the founder.

Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description (B2B, In-House)
INBOUND MARKETING MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
Company: __ ([City, State] / Hybrid / Remote)
Reports to: [Head of Marketing / Founder / VP of Marketing]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (administrative; confirm against actual duties and salary)
Compensation: $_ per year

ABOUT [COMPANY NAME]

[Company Name] sells [product or service] to [buyer type] in [industry]. We have
[number] employees and [number] customers, and today [percentage] of our new
business comes from [outbound sales / referrals / paid ads]. We are hiring an
Inbound Marketing Manager to build the organic side of that mix.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inbound Marketing Manager owns the channels that earn attention rather than
buy it: search, on-site content, the resource library, and the email programs
that follow. The goal is a measurable, repeatable flow of qualified leads that
does not stop when the ad budget stops.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own the inbound funnel end to end: traffic, conversion, lead quality, and
handoff to [sales / the founder]
Run keyword and topic research, and maintain a [monthly / quarterly] editorial
calendar tied to buyer questions
Produce or commission [number] pieces of content per month across
[blog, guides, comparison pages, landing pages, video]
Build and optimize landing pages, forms, and conversion paths in our [CMS]
Design and send lifecycle email: welcome, nurture, reactivation, and product
announcements, using our [marketing automation platform]
Maintain list hygiene, consent records, suppression lists, and segmentation in
our [CRM]
Report on pipeline sourced and influenced by inbound, with a named metric and
a target for each channel
Coordinate with [sales / support / product] so content answers the questions
buyers actually ask

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years running inbound or content-led marketing for a [B2B / B2C]
business, with results you can describe in numbers
Working command of search optimization: keyword research, on-page structure,
internal linking, and technical basics
Hands-on experience in a [marketing automation platform] and a [CRM], as the
person who built the workflows rather than requested them
Strong writing and editing in English, with a portfolio of published work
Comfort with analytics: attribution limits, cohort views, and honest reporting
when a channel is not working

CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE (read before posting)

A marketing manager whose primary duty is office or non-manual work directly
related to management or general business operations, and who exercises
discretion and independent judgment on significant matters, generally qualifies
for the FLSA administrative exemption. The role must also be paid on a salary
basis at or above the federal threshold of $684 per week ($35,568 per year), and
some states set a higher floor. A junior title with no real decision authority is
non-exempt regardless of what the offer letter says. This role sends commercial
email, so the CAN-SPAM Act applies to every message: accurate headers, a clear
opt-out, opt-outs honored within 10 business days, and a valid physical postal
address in each email. This is general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Compensation: $_ per year, [bonus structure], [benefits summary]
To apply, email __ with your resume and two examples of
inbound work you owned from brief to result.

Template 2: Senior Inbound Marketing Manager

For the tier that leads a small team and answers to a pipeline number rather than a publishing number, with the executive exemption analysis written into the note. Compare it against the broader marketing manager templates if the scope is wider than inbound.

Senior Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description (Team Lead)
SENIOR INBOUND MARKETING MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
Company: __ ([City, State] / Hybrid / Remote)
Reports to: [VP of Marketing / CMO / Founder]
Direct reports: [number] ([content writer, SEO specialist, email specialist])
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (executive or administrative; confirm against duties)
Compensation: $_ per year plus [bonus / variable]

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] already publishes and already ranks. What we do not have is a
system: a documented strategy, a team running to it, and a forecast anyone
trusts. The Senior Inbound Marketing Manager builds that system and leads the
[number] people who execute it.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Inbound Marketing Manager sets inbound strategy, owns a budget, leads
a small team, and is accountable for a pipeline number rather than a publishing
number.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Set the annual inbound strategy and defend it against a pipeline target
Manage [number] direct reports: hiring, priorities, one-on-ones, and reviews
Own a budget of $________ covering freelancers, tools, and production
Run the content and search program at portfolio level: what to build, what to
refresh, what to retire
Own lifecycle email strategy and the health of the contact database
Set the definition of a qualified lead jointly with [sales / the founder] and
hold both sides to it
Build the reporting the leadership team reads: sourced pipeline, cost per
qualified lead, and payback period
Represent inbound in planning, pricing, and positioning conversations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number]+ years in inbound, content, or growth marketing, including
[number] years managing people or a significant budget
A documented record of growing an organic channel from a stated baseline
Fluency with attribution and its limits, and the judgment to make calls anyway
Experience hiring and directing freelance writers, editors, or agencies
Clear written communication with executives who do not speak marketing

CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE

With two or more full-time direct reports, genuine authority over hiring and
firing, and management as the primary duty, this role fits the FLSA executive
exemption. Without reports, evaluate it under the administrative exemption
instead, which turns on discretion and independent judgment about matters of
significance rather than headcount. Either way the salary basis test applies at
$684 per week ($35,568 per year) federally, with higher state floors in several
states. Where pay transparency law applies, publish a good-faith range in the
posting itself. This is general information, not legal advice.

accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

Template 3: Inbound Marketing Manager, First Marketing Hire

For the small business hiring its first marketer, with channel focus, budget ownership, and an honest note on when the role is exempt and when it is not.

Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description (First Marketing Hire)
INBOUND MARKETING MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (FIRST MARKETING HIRE)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Founder / Owner / General Manager]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (administrative) if the role genuinely sets direction;
non-exempt if it executes someone else's plan
Compensation: $_ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] is a [industry] business with [number] employees and no marketing
department. Growth so far has come from [referrals / sales calls / word of
mouth]. You would be the first marketing hire, which means you get an empty page
and the authority to fill it, plus every constraint of a small company: no team,
a real budget ceiling, and a founder who will ask what happened this month.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inbound Marketing Manager builds our first repeatable source of inbound
leads, choosing the two or three channels most likely to work and running them
properly rather than covering all of them badly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Pick and defend a channel focus for the first [6 / 12] months
Rebuild or improve the website so it converts: messaging, pages, forms, proof
Run keyword research and publish [number] pieces per month, written by you or
commissioned from freelancers
Set up and maintain our [CRM] and [email platform], including consent capture
and suppression lists
Build the lead handoff to [the founder / sales] and the follow-up sequence
behind it
Track a small number of honest metrics and report them [monthly] in writing
Own the marketing budget of $________ and account for it
Run [social, events, partnerships] only where they feed the inbound engine

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years of hands-on inbound marketing, including work at a company
small enough that you did the work yourself
Comfort writing, editing, building pages, and sending email without a designer
or a developer on call
Judgment about what to skip; a first marketing hire who tries every channel
fails at all of them
Experience reporting directly to a founder or owner
Willingness to work without a playbook and to write one as you go

CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE

Be honest about which side of the exemption this role sits on. A first marketing
hire who sets strategy, owns a budget, and makes binding channel decisions is
performing administrative work involving discretion and independent judgment on
significant matters, and is exempt if also paid on a salary basis at or above
$684 per week ($35,568 per year). Someone hired to execute a plan the founder
writes is non-exempt and owed overtime past 40 hours in a week, which matters at
a small company where marketing hours spike around launches. Track hours for
anyone non-exempt from day one. This is general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Compensation: $_ per year, [bonus], [benefits summary]
To apply, email __ with your resume and a short note on
which two channels you would start with here and why.

Template 4: Inbound Marketing Manager, Ecommerce

For a direct-to-consumer store cutting its paid dependence, covering catalog search, email and SMS programs, reviews, and disclosure duties. The email marketing manager templates go deeper if sending is the whole job.

Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description (Ecommerce / DTC)
INBOUND MARKETING MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (ECOMMERCE)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Head of Ecommerce / Owner / Head of Growth]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (administrative; confirm against duties)
Compensation: $_ per year plus [performance bonus]

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] sells [product category] direct to consumers at [store URL]. We
do $_ in annual revenue, with [percentage] of traffic currently from paid
channels. We are hiring an Inbound Marketing Manager to reduce that dependence
by growing organic search, owned email, and retention.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inbound Marketing Manager grows non-paid revenue: organic search into
category and product pages, the email and SMS programs that convert and retain,
and the content that earns links and repeat visits.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own organic search for category, product, and editorial pages, including
technical health, structured data, and internal linking
Plan and produce content that supports purchase decisions: buying guides,
comparisons, care and how-to, and user-generated content programs
Run the email and SMS calendar: welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase,
replenishment, and win-back
Manage list growth and consent capture, with separate opt-in for SMS
Improve conversion on the paths you own: page speed, product content, reviews,
and proof
Report weekly on organic sessions, email revenue, list health, and repeat
purchase rate
Coordinate with [merchandising / operations] on launches and seasonal pushes

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years in ecommerce marketing with direct responsibility for an
organic or owned channel
Practical search optimization experience on a large catalog
Hands-on with an [ecommerce platform], an [email and SMS platform], and
analytics
Understanding of review, testimonial, and endorsement disclosure requirements
Copywriting that sells without overstating the product

CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE

Two compliance areas sit inside this job. First, commercial email is governed by
the CAN-SPAM Act: accurate sender information and subject lines, a working
opt-out honored within 10 business days, an opt-out mechanism that keeps working
for at least 30 days after the message goes out, and a valid physical postal
address in every email. Marketing text messages carry separate consent rules,
so keep SMS opt-in distinct from email opt-in. Second, reviews, testimonials, and
paid creator content are advertising: material connections must be disclosed and
claims must be substantiated. Write both expectations into the job description so
the person you hire knows they own them. This is general information, not legal
advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Compensation: $_ per year, [performance bonus], [product allowance],
[benefits summary]
To apply, email __ with your resume and one organic or
email program you grew, with before and after numbers.

Template 5: Inbound Marketing Manager, Agency Side

For an agency account lead: client strategy, directing specialists, scope discipline, utilization, and the shared email responsibility that agencies often assume sits only with the client.

Inbound Marketing Manager Job Description (Agency, Multi-Client)
INBOUND MARKETING MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (AGENCY SIDE)
Agency: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Director of Client Services / Managing Partner]
Client load: [number] active accounts
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (administrative; confirm against duties and salary)
Compensation: $_ per year plus [retention or growth bonus]

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Agency Name] runs inbound programs for [number] clients in [industries]. The
Inbound Marketing Manager owns a portfolio of accounts: the strategy, the
delivery, the reporting, and the relationship. This is a billable role with a
utilization target, and the difference between a good month and a bad one is
usually scope discipline.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inbound Marketing Manager leads inbound strategy and execution for [number]
client accounts, directs the specialists assigned to each one, and is
accountable for client results, client retention, and hours delivered against
the contracted scope.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own inbound strategy for [number] accounts and present it to each client
Direct writers, search specialists, designers, and developers assigned to your
accounts
Run monthly reporting calls with clear numbers and clear next steps
Manage scope: flag out-of-scope requests, price them, and protect margin
Hit a utilization target of [percentage] billable hours
Support new business with audits, proposals, and scoping calls
Keep client access, credentials, and data handling compliant with our policy
Own renewal conversations with [account director / partner]

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years running inbound programs, including [number] years agency side
Ability to hold a room of client executives and say no with a reason
Command of search, content, conversion, and lifecycle email across industries
Comfort switching context between [number] accounts in a single week
Accurate time tracking and honest scope reporting

CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE

Agency account roles are usually exempt under the FLSA administrative exemption
because the primary duty is advising clients and exercising discretion on
significant matters. Confirm it rather than assume it: someone who only executes
tasks assigned by an account director may be non-exempt, and the salary basis
test still applies at $684 per week ($35,568 per year) federally, with higher
state floors in several states. Utilization targets do not change the analysis,
but a non-exempt employee pushed past 40 hours in a busy week is owed overtime.
When your team sends email on a client's behalf, the CAN-SPAM Act can hold both
the client and the agency responsible, so put compliance duties in writing in
both the job description and the client contract. This is general information,
not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Agency Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

CLASSIFICATION NOTE (read this before signing)

Calling someone a contractor does not make them one. Under the FLSA economic
reality test, classification turns on the total circumstances of the working
relationship: control over the work, opportunity for profit or loss, investment,
permanence, skill and initiative, and how integral the work is to the business.
The IRS applies its own multi-factor analysis, and many states use a stricter
ABC test in which a worker is presumed to be an employee unless every prong is
met. A consultant who works set hours, uses your equipment, takes daily
direction, and has no other clients looks like an employee to every one of these
tests. Contract for deliverables and outcomes, not for a schedule, and get the
agreement in writing before work starts. This is general information, not legal
advice.

Exempt, Non-Exempt, or Contract

Most inbound marketing manager roles are exempt under the FLSA administrative exemption, but the exemption rests on duties rather than on the title. The test asks whether the primary duty is office or non-manual work directly related to management or general business operations, and whether it includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.

That standard is set out in the federal regulation on administrative employees, which lists marketing among the qualifying functional areas and sets the salary basis requirement at $684 per week, or $35,568 per year. Several states impose a higher floor, so confirm yours before classifying anyone.

The administrative exemption is a duties test first
The federal regulation on administrative employees sets three conditions: payment on a salary or fee basis at not less than $684 per week, a primary duty of office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of the employer or its customers, and a primary duty that includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. Marketing is explicitly listed among the functional areas that qualify. The trap is the third condition. A manager who chooses channels, sets the calendar, allocates a budget, and decides what to stop doing is exercising judgment on matters of significance. Someone executing a plan another person wrote, on a schedule another person sets, is not, whatever the title says. Several states also impose a salary floor above the federal one. This is general information, not legal advice.
Every commercial email is regulated
The CAN-SPAM Act covers all commercial electronic mail, including business-to-business messages, and there is no exemption for a small sender or a small list. The core duties are simple and non-negotiable: no false or misleading header information, no deceptive subject lines, clear identification that the message is an advertisement, a valid physical postal address in every message, a clear and conspicuous explanation of how to opt out, an opt-out mechanism that keeps working for at least 30 days after sending, and opt-out requests honored within 10 business days. You cannot charge a fee or require anything beyond an email address to process an opt-out. Penalties reach $53,088 per individual email, and more than one party can be held responsible for the same message. Write these duties into the job description so the person who owns the sending also owns the compliance.
The contact database is a business asset
An inbound marketing manager builds and holds the contact database, which for most small businesses is the second most valuable data set the company owns after the customer ledger. Treat it that way in hiring. Provision access under named company accounts rather than a personal login, so nothing walks out the door when the person does. Keep consent records with the source and timestamp of every subscription, because an opt-in you cannot evidence is an opt-in you do not have. Maintain suppression lists across every sending tool, not per tool. Write list ownership, confidentiality, and return of data into the offer paperwork, and run a documented offboarding step that transfers accounts and revokes access on the last day. None of this is exotic; it is simply the part small companies skip until the first time it costs them.
Fractional help is a misclassification risk
Fractional and freelance inbound help is common and often the right call for a small business, but the contractor label has to survive scrutiny. Under the FLSA economic reality test, classification turns on the total circumstances of the relationship: the degree of control, the worker's opportunity for profit or loss, relative investments, the permanence of the relationship, the skill and initiative required, and how integral the work is to the business. The IRS applies its own multi-factor analysis, and several states use an ABC test under which a worker is presumed an employee unless the hiring business proves all three prongs. A consultant who works your hours, on your equipment, under daily direction, with no other clients, is an employee in substance. Contract for deliverables and outcomes, put the agreement in writing before work starts, and revisit it when the engagement quietly becomes full-time. This is general information, not legal advice.

If a role sits close to the line, our breakdown of exempt versus non-exempt classification works through the tests in order. The safe default at a small company is to track hours for anyone whose classification you are not certain about, because reconstructing hours after a complaint is far harder than recording them.

The Person Who Owns Your Contact Database

An inbound marketing manager builds and holds the contact database, which makes this hire a data and compliance decision as much as a marketing one. Every commercial email the company sends will pass through this person, and the CAN-SPAM Act applies to all of it, including business-to-business messages.

There Is No Small Sender Exemption
The FTC states plainly that the CAN-SPAM Act covers all commercial electronic mail with no exception for business-to-business messages, and that each separate email in violation is subject to penalties of up to $53,088. More than one party can be held responsible for the same message, which is why an agency sending on a client's behalf does not shift the exposure away from the client (Federal Trade Commission, CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide).

The duties themselves are not complicated: accurate headers and subject lines, clear identification of the message as an advertisement, a valid physical postal address in every send, a conspicuous opt-out that keeps working for at least 30 days after the message goes out, and opt-out requests honored within 10 business days at no cost to the recipient. Write them into the job description so the person who owns the sending also owns the obligation.

The second half is access. Provision the website, the CRM, the email platform, and the analytics property under named company accounts rather than a personal login, keep consent records with source and timestamp, and build the revocation step into offboarding before you need it. A repeatable onboarding checklist is where that belongs.

What to Pay an Inbound Marketing Manager

There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called inbound marketing manager, so there is no single median to quote. The role straddles two classifications, and where a specific job lands between them depends on whether the person sets direction and owns a budget or executes a program someone else designed.

The Two Classifications the Role Straddles
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), Marketing Managers (SOC 11-2021) had a national median annual wage of $166,790, with the 10th percentile at $90,260, the 25th at $123,020, the 75th at $216,410, and the 90th at $293,610. Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists (SOC 13-1161) had a median of $78,760, ranging from $43,390 at the 10th percentile to $155,480 at the 90th (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS national estimates).

Employment across marketing management is substantial and growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 407,000 marketing managers in 2024 and 941,700 market research analysts and marketing specialists, and its Occupational Outlook Handbook projects employment of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers to grow 6 percent from 2024 to 2034, with about 36,400 openings a year on average. Publish a good-faith range where pay transparency laws apply, and price against your metro rather than the national figure.

Screening for Skill, Not Vocabulary

Inbound marketing has an unusually well-developed vocabulary, which makes it easy for a candidate to sound expert without having run anything. Screen for specific artifacts and specific numbers instead of for fluency in the terminology.

Three questions separate operators from spectators. Ask for one page or one keyword they moved, with the starting position, the ending position, and what they changed. Ask them to walk through a nurture sequence they built, naming the trigger, the branch logic, and the exit condition. Then ask what they stopped doing last year and why.

Signal to testHow to test itWhat a weak answer sounds like
Search abilityOne page or keyword moved, with before and after positionsGeneral talk about strategy and best practices
WritingTwo published pieces they wrote, not commissionedA portfolio of work they managed at a distance
AutomationWalk through a nurture flow: trigger, branches, exitNaming platforms rather than describing logic
MeasurementHow they attribute a deal with a six-month cycleA single-touch number with no acknowledged limits
JudgmentWhat they stopped doing and whyA list of everything they ran, with no cuts
Compliance awarenessHow they handle opt-outs and consent recordsAssuming the email tool handles it

For a first marketing hire specifically, weight judgment above channel depth. The person will have to decide what not to do in a company with no precedent, and a candidate who has only worked inside an existing program rarely has that muscle.

Hiring Without a Marketing Department

Small business inbound hiring fails in three predictable places: the posting is too broad, the expected timeline is shorter than the channel allows, and the access handover on day one is chaos. Each has a fix that costs nothing.

The posting asks for every channel, so the strongest candidates skip it
The most common small business inbound posting lists search, content, email, social, paid, events, partnerships, video, and analytics, then offers one salary and no team. Experienced marketers read that as a company that has not decided what it wants, and they self-select out, because they know the review conversation at month six will be about the channels they had no time for. The people who do apply are the ones who have not run a program end to end. Cut the list to the two or three channels you will actually judge the person on, say which ones you are deliberately not doing yet, and put the single success metric in the posting. A narrower job attracts a better candidate, which is the opposite of what it feels like when you are writing it.
Inbound results arrive after the patience runs out
Search and content programs take months to compound, and a founder who expects leads in week six will conclude the hire failed long before the work could have worked. That mismatch is a hiring problem, not a marketing problem, and the job description is where you fix it. Write the ramp into the posting: what gets built in the first 90 days, what gets measured at six months, and what the target looks like at twelve. Name the leading indicators you will accept in the meantime, such as pages published, keyword coverage, conversion rate on the paths rebuilt, and list growth. Then hold yourself to that timeline. Candidates who have done this before will read the ramp as a sign you understand the channel, and it becomes a selling point rather than a caveat.
A marketing hire arrives with more access to give and no process to give it
An inbound marketing manager needs the website, the CRM, the email platform, the analytics property, the ad accounts, the domain records, and the brand assets, usually in the first week, and at a small company all of those live in different people's personal logins. Then the offer paperwork, confidentiality agreement, tool access, and brand training all have to happen at once while someone is also trying to make the person feel welcome. FirstHR was built for exactly that. The onboarding wizard runs the same sequence for every new hire, e-signature handles the offer and the confidentiality agreement, document management stores what was signed against the employee profile, task workflows assign each access grant to the person who owns that system, and training modules cover brand and compliance basics before the first campaign ships. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.

The pattern underneath all three is the same. Decide the scope before you post, write the ramp into the document, and make onboarding a checklist rather than a scramble. None of that requires a marketing department or an HR department; it requires deciding once and writing it down.

Key Takeaways
Inbound marketing manager names a methodology, not a scope, so the posting has to list the specific channels the role owns and the ones it does not.
Four different jobs hide under the title: search and content engine, lifecycle and database owner, full-funnel first hire, and agency account lead.
The FLSA administrative exemption needs real discretion on matters of significance plus salary of at least $684 per week ($35,568 per year), and several states set a higher floor.
No BLS occupation matches the title; benchmark against Marketing Managers at a $166,790 median and marketing specialists at $78,760 (BLS OEWS, May 2025).
The role owns your commercial email, and CAN-SPAM applies to every message with penalties reaching $53,088 per email and no small sender exemption.
Provision every tool under named company accounts, keep consent records with source and timestamp, and build access revocation into offboarding before you need it.
A marketing hire arrives needing access to eight systems in the first week. FirstHR runs the same onboarding sequence every time, with e-signature for the offer and the confidentiality agreement, task workflows that assign each access grant to the person who owns that system, and document management that stores what was signed against the employee profile. Frequently Asked Questions

What does an inbound marketing manager do?

An inbound marketing manager owns the channels that earn attention rather than buy it: organic search, on-site content, conversion paths, and the lifecycle email that follows a form fill. The day-to-day is keyword and topic research, an editorial calendar, landing pages and forms, nurture sequences, list hygiene, and reporting on how much qualified pipeline the organic side produced. The word inbound describes a methodology, not a fixed scope, so two companies posting the same title often want different jobs. Before you write the posting, decide which version you are hiring: the search and content engine, the lifecycle and database owner, the full-funnel first marketing hire, or an agency-style account lead. Then list the channels the role owns and, just as usefully, the ones it does not.

What is the difference between an inbound marketing manager and a demand generation manager?

The difference is the channel mix and the metric. An inbound marketing manager is defined by earned and owned channels: search, content, conversion paths, and lifecycle email, judged on organic traffic that converts and on pipeline sourced without media spend. A demand generation manager is defined by pipeline regardless of channel, which usually means paid media, outbound support, webinars, and events sit inside the job alongside content, with a budget and a cost per opportunity target attached. In practice the roles overlap at small companies, and the honest test is whether the person will be handed an ad budget. If yes, you are hiring demand generation. If the mandate is to build a lead source that keeps working when spending stops, you are hiring inbound. Say which one in the first paragraph of the posting.

Is an inbound marketing manager exempt from overtime?

Usually yes, but only if the duties and the pay both support it. The FLSA administrative exemption requires payment on a salary or fee basis of at least $684 per week ($35,568 per year) under the federal rule, a primary duty of office or non-manual work directly related to management or general business operations, and the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. Marketing is named among the qualifying functional areas. A manager who selects channels, sets the calendar, allocates a budget, and decides what to stop doing meets the judgment test. A person executing someone else's plan on someone else's schedule does not, whatever the title is, and that person is non-exempt and owed overtime past 40 hours in a week. Several states set a higher salary floor than the federal one, so check your state before you classify. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does an inbound marketing manager make?

There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called inbound marketing manager, so benchmark against the two classifications the role straddles. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), Marketing Managers (SOC 11-2021) had a national median annual wage of $166,790, with the 10th percentile at $90,260 and the 25th at $123,020. Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists (SOC 13-1161) had a median of $78,760, with the 25th percentile at $58,350 and the 75th at $108,310. Most single-contributor inbound roles at small businesses price between those two: above the specialist median because the person owns strategy, below the manager median because there is no team and no large budget underneath them. Adjust for your metro, and publish a good-faith range where pay transparency law requires it.

What should an inbound marketing manager job description include?

Seven things, in this order. The business context in two sentences, including where leads come from today. The named channels the role owns and the ones it explicitly does not. The single metric the role is judged on. The tools it inherits, by category rather than by brand. The experience bar stated as hands-on years, with a portfolio or writing sample requirement. The FLSA classification and the pay, or a good-faith range where the law requires one. And the compliance duties that come with the job, which for this role means commercial email rules and disclosure of material connections in reviews and creator content. Add the equal opportunity statement, name a real person to apply to, and give a decision timeline. The six templates on this page follow that structure so only the business-specific parts change.

Can a small business hire one person to do all of inbound marketing?

Yes, and most do, but the posting has to be honest about the trade. One person can run two or three channels properly. The same person cannot run search, content production, email, social, paid, events, and video at a standard that produces results, and a posting that asks for all of them signals a company that has not decided what it wants. Pick the two or three channels most likely to work for your buyer, name them, and say which ones you are deliberately deferring. Budget for freelance production so the manager can direct writers instead of writing everything personally. Write a ramp into the job description covering the first 90 days, six months, and twelve months, because inbound compounds slowly and a founder expecting leads in week six will judge the hire before the work could have worked. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.

Should I hire an inbound marketing manager or use an agency?

Hire in-house when inbound is a core growth channel you intend to own, when product knowledge is the hard part of the content, and when you can keep someone busy for a full week. Use an agency or a contractor when you need a specific build rather than an ongoing program, when the work is seasonal, or when you cannot yet justify a salary at the market rate. A common and effective sequence is to contract a consultant to build the foundation and document it, then hire a full-time manager to run and extend it. If you go the contract route, contract for deliverables and outcomes rather than a schedule, because a consultant who works your hours on your equipment under daily direction with no other clients looks like an employee under the FLSA economic reality test, the IRS multi-factor analysis, and the stricter ABC test used in several states.
