Lead Product Marketing Writer Job Description Templates

6 templates for the four different jobs this title covers: B2B software, first writing hire, technical products, ecommerce, senior individual contributor, and a fractional scope of work. With scope language, the FLSA tests, and federal pay data. Download as DOCX.

The first time I wrote a posting for this role I described four different jobs in one document. Message hierarchy and launch narrative in the first paragraph. Blog volume and social captions in the second. Competitive research and pricing input in the third. Nobody strong applied, and the people who did apply were right to be confused.

Lead product marketing writer is a real and useful title, but it is not one job. It is a bracket that covers a solo writer at a fifteen-person company, a player-coach directing three freelancers, a senior craft specialist inside an established product marketing team, and, fairly often, a product marketing manager wearing a cheaper label.

The federal picture explains why the market feels thin. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 135,400 writers and authors employed in 2024, with employment projected to grow 4 percent through 2034 and about 13,400 openings a year. Product marketing writing is a slice of that, competing with every other employer for the same senior people. At FirstHR we build hiring templates for companies doing this without an HR department, and the six below cover each version of the role separately.

TL;DR
A lead product marketing writer owns the message hierarchy, launch narratives, product pages, and enablement copy, plus editorial authority over product language. There is no federal occupation code for the title. Benchmark against writers and authors at a $76,910 median (BLS OEWS, May 2025) and adjust upward for lead scope. Six templates below, downloadable as DOCX.

What a Lead Product Marketing Writer Actually Owns

The role owns two things: the written expression of the product, and the authority to decide it. That means the message hierarchy, launch narratives, product pages, sales enablement copy, and the voice guide that keeps everyone else consistent with all of it.

What it does not own, at most companies, is the strategy underneath. Pricing, packaging, segmentation, and the launch calendar sit with a product marketing manager or a founder. The lead writer translates those decisions into language and pushes back when the language exposes a decision that was never really made.

The only writer in the company
Lead means owner
There is nobody else, so the title marks authority rather than headcount. This person decides the words, writes most of them, and answers for the ones an agency wrote. Scope is total and the risk is burnout, not politics.
Writer with a bench underneath
Lead means player-coach
One senior writer directing freelancers, an agency, or a junior. Still writes the hard pieces personally, but half the job is briefing, reviewing, and saying no. Say how many people and whether they are employees or vendors.
Writer inside a product marketing team
Lead means senior craft
Positioning belongs to a product marketing manager, and the writer leads the writing craft within it. A clean role to hire for, provided the posting is honest that the message hierarchy arrives rather than gets invented.
Writer who is quietly the whole function
Lead means mislabeled
The posting says writer, the job includes pricing input, competitive research, launch planning, and sales enablement. That is a product marketing manager with a writing title, and paying it as a writer is why the search stalls.
Name the Version Before You Write a Word
Decide which of the four situations above you are hiring for, then write the posting for that one. A solo writer needs autonomy and tolerance for chaos. A player-coach needs review discipline and the patience to brief other people. A craft specialist inside a team needs to be told the hierarchy already exists. And if the honest answer is the fourth box, close the document and post a product marketing manager role instead, because no writing salary will close that candidate.

Lead, Senior, or Manager: Decide Before You Post

Lead marks authority over the product language. Senior marks craft without that authority. Manager marks responsibility for people and for the strategy the writing serves. Those are three different hires with three different salary bands, and mixing them is why this search takes six months.

The practical test is simple. Ask who decides what the company claims about the product when two people disagree. If the answer is the person you are hiring, the title is lead. If the answer is someone else and the hire executes brilliantly inside that decision, the title is senior.

Write the row that matches your situation into the posting verbatim. Candidates at this level read job descriptions forensically, and an explicit boundary reads as competence rather than as a limitation.

What Belongs in the Posting

A posting for this role does four jobs: it defines scope precisely enough that senior people can judge it, it filters mismatched applicants, it protects you on classification, and it closes the candidate. Most postings do only the last one, with adjectives.

The parts that define the job
Which surfaces the writer owns, listed by name
Who owns the message hierarchy, you or them
How many products or SKUs
Who reviews the copy and who approves it
The parts that filter applicants
Years at senior or lead scope, not years writing
Subject matter the samples must demonstrate
Whether direct reports or vendors are involved
What the role is explicitly not
The parts that protect you
FLSA classification stated on the posting
W-2 or 1099, with the contractor scope separated
Who signs off on product claims
Equal opportunity statement
The parts that win the hire
A real salary range, not a placeholder
The size of the marketing team today
How launches actually run here
A named person and a real timeline

The omission that costs the most is volume. How many products, how many pages, how many launches a year, and how much of the writing is net new versus maintenance. Senior writers are estimating workload from the first paragraph, and vagueness reads as a company that has not counted. Our guide to writing a job description covers the general structure, and the rest of the library sits in hiring templates.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Product Marketing Writer owns the written expression of the product:
positioning copy, launch narratives, website product pages, and the sales and
lifecycle assets that carry the same story. This is a senior individual
contributor role with editorial authority over product language across the

Comfort giving editorial feedback to people who do not report to you

NICE TO HAVE

Experience in [our category or an adjacent one]
Customer research or win-loss interview experience
Basic familiarity with [our CMS, analytics, or design tools]

CLASSIFICATION NOTE (read before posting)

A full-time lead product marketing writer at this level is normally exempt from
overtime. The likely basis is the creative professional exemption for work whose
primary duty requires invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a
recognized artistic or creative field, or the administrative exemption for work
directly related to management or general business operations that involves the
exercise of discretion and independent judgment. Both require the salary basis
and salary level tests to be met. The word "lead" in the title does not create
an exemption on its own, and a writer producing copy to a fixed brief with no
discretion may be non-exempt. Classify on the actual duties. This is general
information, not legal advice.

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

Template 2: Lead Product Marketing Writer, First Writing Hire

For the company where the founder still writes the website. It sets expectations for someone who has to build the system rather than inherit it, and includes an explicit section on what the role is not.

Lead Product Marketing Writer Job Description (First Writing Hire)
LEAD PRODUCT MARKETING WRITER JOB DESCRIPTION (FIRST WRITING HIRE)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Founder / CEO]
Employment type: Full-time, W-2
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Compensation: $_ to $_ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Right now the founder writes the website, the launch posts, and the sales
one-pagers between everything else. That is why this role exists. You are the
first writing hire at [Company Name], and you will inherit a product that works,
a story that is half told, and no messaging document at all.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Product Marketing Writer takes over all product language at
[Company Name]: writing it, deciding it, and building the first version of the
system that keeps it consistent. You will have no direct reports and full
editorial authority.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Rewrite the [website / product pages / onboarding emails] against a message
hierarchy you build in the first [30 / 60] days
Interview [number] customers and [number] lost prospects, then write down what
they actually said instead of what we assumed
Write every launch: announcement post, product page, email, and the internal
brief that keeps everyone saying the same thing
Build the first sales one-pager, battlecard, and objection-handling document
Write the messaging and voice guide, then hold the line on it in review
Direct [number] freelancers on volume work: blog, help center, social
Tell the founder when the story is wrong, with evidence

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years writing for a product company, including time as the only
writer or the senior writer on a small team
Writing samples that show a full arc: research, decision, copy, result
Willingness to work without a brief, a brand book, or an established process
Comfort working directly with a founder who has strong opinions about words

WHAT THIS ROLE IS NOT

Not a content marketing role. Blog volume and SEO are [a freelancer's job /
a later hire], not the core of this one.
Not a manager role today. Direct reports may come later.
Not a brand or design role, though you will work with [designer / agency].

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

A first writing hire with authority over messaging and no assigned brief is
normally exempt under the creative professional or administrative exemption,
provided the salary basis and salary level tests are met. Be careful with the
common startup version of this hire: a part-time writer paid hourly to execute
assigned copy is usually non-exempt and owed overtime past forty hours in a
week, and paying someone as a 1099 contractor while setting their hours, tools,
and review process is a misclassification risk regardless of the title. This is
general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

Template 3: Lead Product Marketing Writer, Technical and Developer Products

For API, infrastructure, and security products, with the documentation boundary and the claims register written in. If the job is closer to documentation than to marketing, use the technical writer templates instead.

Lead Product Marketing Writer, Technical and Developer Products
LEAD PRODUCT MARKETING WRITER JOB DESCRIPTION (TECHNICAL PRODUCTS)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Head of Product Marketing / Head of Marketing]
Employment type: Full-time, W-2
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Compensation: $_ to $_ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] sells [API / infrastructure / security / data] products to
[developers / engineering leaders / IT buyers]. Our audience reads
documentation before it reads marketing, and it stops reading the moment a claim
does not survive contact with the product.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Product Marketing Writer owns technical product language: launch
narratives, architecture explanations, comparison content, and the assets sales
engineers use in the room. The role sits between product marketing and
documentation without becoming either one.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Write launch and product page copy that survives a technical review
Translate [architecture, benchmarks, security posture, compliance status] into
claims we can defend in front of an engineer
Own the boundary with documentation: what belongs in docs, what belongs in
marketing, and how they reference each other
Write technical enablement for sales engineers: reference architectures,
proof-of-concept guides, objection responses
Run technical review with [engineering / product] before anything ships, and
keep a record of what was verified and by whom
Maintain the claims register: every performance, security, or compliance
statement with the evidence and the date it was checked
Direct [technical freelancers / contract writers] on volume work

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years writing for a technical audience at a product company
Ability to read [API docs / architecture diagrams / benchmark results] and ask
the right follow-up question
Samples that show technical accuracy under marketing pressure
Experience running technical review with engineers who do not enjoy reviews

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

This role is normally exempt. Note that the federal regulations treat technical
writing and creative writing differently: routine technical writing that follows
an established format is not automatically creative professional work, while a
role that sets message hierarchy and exercises discretion over what the company
claims will typically qualify under the administrative exemption instead. Either
route still requires the salary basis and salary level tests. Do not assume the
title settles it. This is general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Compensation: $_ to $_ per year, [bonus], [equity], [benefits]
To apply, send your resume and one sample where you had to explain something
technical to a buyer who was not an engineer, to __.

Template 4: Lead Product Marketing Writer, Ecommerce and DTC

For a consumer brand shipping seasonally: product detail pages, packaging copy, lifecycle email, and claim substantiation. For catalog production at volume, the product copywriter templates are the closer fit.

Lead Product Marketing Writer, Ecommerce and DTC Brand
LEAD PRODUCT MARKETING WRITER JOB DESCRIPTION (ECOMMERCE AND DTC)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote / Hybrid)
Reports to: [Brand Director / Head of Marketing / Owner]
Employment type: Full-time, W-2
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Compensation: $_ to $_ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

[Company Name] sells [product category] direct to consumers through [our site,
retail, marketplaces]. We launch [number] products a year and refresh the
catalog every [season]. Copy is the only salesperson in the room.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Product Marketing Writer owns the words on every product surface:
product detail pages, launch campaigns, packaging copy, lifecycle email, and the
brand language that holds them together. The role carries editorial authority
over voice and final review on claims.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Write and maintain product detail page copy for [number] SKUs
Own launch copy end to end: landing page, email sequence, paid and organic
social, retail or marketplace listings
Write packaging and insert copy within [legal, size, regulatory] constraints
Set the voice guide and review everything the [agency, freelancers, junior
writer] produces against it
Own claim substantiation with [legal / compliance / the owner]: every
performance, ingredient, sustainability, or comparison claim is backed and
dated before it ships
Write lifecycle email and retention copy with [the email manager]
Test headlines and page copy, and report on what moved conversion

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years writing product copy for a consumer brand, with senior or lead
scope
Portfolio of product pages and launches, with results where you have them
Experience writing inside [regulatory / claim substantiation] constraints in
[supplements / beauty / food / apparel / electronics]
Ability to hold a voice across a catalog rather than one clever headline

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

A full-time lead writer at this level is normally exempt under the creative
professional or administrative exemption when the salary basis and salary level
tests are met. Two cautions specific to consumer brands. High-volume catalog
production written to a fixed template with no discretion looks non-exempt, and
seasonal peaks make untracked hours expensive if the classification is wrong.
Separately, advertising claims are the company's legal exposure, not the
writer's judgment call: put substantiation and sign-off in writing. This is
general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY

Compensation: $_ to $_ per year, [bonus], [product allowance],

To apply, send your resume and three product pages you wrote to
__.

Template 5: Senior Product Marketing Writer, No Direct Reports

For when you want senior craft inside someone else's message hierarchy. Faster to fill, cheaper, and honest about what it does not include. Pair it with a product marketing manager posting if the strategy seat is also open.

Senior Product Marketing Writer Job Description (No Direct Reports)
SENIOR PRODUCT MARKETING WRITER JOB DESCRIPTION (INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTOR)
Company: __ ([City, State] / Remote)
Reports to: [Lead Product Marketing Writer / Head of Product Marketing]
Employment type: Full-time, W-2
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Compensation: $_ to $_ per year

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Use this posting when you want senior writing craft without senior scope. The
Senior Product Marketing Writer executes at a high level inside a message
hierarchy someone else owns, which makes it a faster hire, a cheaper hire, and
an honest one.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Product Marketing Writer writes product pages, launch assets, and
enablement material to a defined message hierarchy, contributes to that
hierarchy without owning it, and has no direct reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Write [product pages, launch posts, emails, one-pagers, case studies] to brief
Contribute research and recommendations to the message hierarchy
Interview customers and turn transcripts into usable proof points
Keep the voice guide applied consistently in your own work
Partner with [design, demand generation, sales] on assets they need
Give peer feedback on drafts without holding final editorial authority

WHAT SEPARATES THIS FROM THE LEAD ROLE

Does not set the message hierarchy or the voice guide
Does not hold final approval on product claims
Does not direct freelancers, agencies, or junior writers
Does not represent product marketing in cross-functional planning

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

[Number] years writing for a product company
Strong samples across at least two of: product pages, launch copy, enablement
Ability to work to a brief and hit dates without supervision

CLASSIFICATION NOTE

Exempt status is less obvious here than in the lead role, because this posting
deliberately removes discretion. A senior writer who still exercises independent
judgment on how to make the case is normally exempt under the creative
professional exemption when the salary tests are met. A writer executing tightly
specified copy with no latitude may be non-exempt. If you write the brief so
narrowly that judgment disappears, classify accordingly and track hours. This is
general information, not legal advice.

EEO STATEMENT

[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.

PURPOSE OF THE ENGAGEMENT

[Client] needs senior product marketing writing for a defined period: [a launch,

difference matters legally.

[Number] customer interviews summarized into proof points

HOW THE WORK IS DONE

The contractor controls the schedule, location, tools, and method
The client reviews deliverables against the agreed scope, not the daily work
Revisions: [number] rounds per deliverable, then [hourly rate] applies
Communication: [weekly check-in], [shared document workspace]
The contractor may work for other clients during the engagement

COMMERCIAL TERMS

Out-of-scope work is quoted separately in writing before it starts
Intellectual property in the delivered work transfers to the client on full
payment, under a written work-for-hire and assignment clause
Confidentiality: [term]
Termination: [notice period] by either party

CLASSIFICATION NOTE (the reason this document exists)

Contractor status turns on the reality of the relationship, not the label on the
invoice. If you set the writer's hours, require attendance at internal meetings,
supply the equipment, direct the method, and prevent other clients, you have an
employee and the exposure that comes with a misclassified one: back overtime,
payroll taxes, and penalties. Keep the engagement genuinely project-shaped,
put the scope in writing, and convert to W-2 the moment the relationship starts
looking like employment. Several states apply a stricter test than the federal
one, so check your state rules before you sign. This is general information, not
legal advice.

Exempt Status When a Lead Has No Direct Reports

A lead writer with nobody reporting to them is normally still exempt, because supervision is only required by the executive exemption. This role qualifies through a different route: creative professional or administrative, depending on what the day actually contains.

The creative professional test is set out in the federal regulation on creative professional employees, which covers primary duties requiring invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a recognized artistic or creative field. The administrative route is described in a Department of Labor fact sheet on the administrative exemption, which lists marketing and advertising among the qualifying functional areas.

The creative professional route
The federal regulation on creative professionals covers work whose primary duty requires invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a recognized artistic or creative field, and it names advertising and writing among the fields where the exemption applies. A lead product marketing writer who decides what the company says and how it says it fits that description comfortably. Two limits worth knowing. The regulation distinguishes original creative work from work that depends primarily on intelligence, diligence, and accuracy, which is where routine production copy falls. And the exemption still requires the salary basis and salary level tests to be satisfied, currently a salary of at least $684 per week under the standard rule. This is general information, not legal advice.
The administrative route
When the writing job is really a marketing job, the administrative exemption is often the better fit. It applies to office work directly related to management or general business operations that includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, and the Department of Labor lists advertising and marketing among the functional areas that qualify. A lead writer who sets message hierarchy, decides positioning language, and holds approval on claims is exercising exactly that kind of judgment. The same salary basis and salary level tests apply. Employers do not have to pick one exemption in advance: what matters is that at least one applies to the actual duties, and that you can explain which one and why. This is general information, not legal advice.
Lead without direct reports is still fine
A common worry is that calling someone a lead with nobody reporting to them breaks the exemption. It does not, because the executive exemption is only one of several routes and it is the one that requires supervising two or more full-time employees. A lead individual contributor simply qualifies through the creative professional or administrative route instead. The mirror-image mistake is more dangerous: assuming the title alone carries the exemption. Courts and investigators look at the duties, not the org chart label, so a writer who executes assigned copy to a fixed brief with no latitude can be non-exempt no matter how senior the title sounds. Write the duties honestly, then classify from them. This is general information, not legal advice.
The contractor trap in writing roles
Writing is one of the most misclassified functions at small companies, because paying a writer per project feels naturally contractual. It stops being contractual the moment you set the hours, require attendance at internal meetings, supply the tools and the accounts, direct the method, review work in progress rather than at delivery, and expect availability that rules out other clients. At that point you have an employee, and the bill for getting it wrong includes back overtime, payroll taxes, and penalties. Several states apply a stricter test than the federal one, and some presume employment unless the employer proves otherwise. Use a real scope of work for genuine project engagements, and convert to W-2 when the relationship changes. This is general information, not legal advice.

Whichever route applies, the salary basis and salary level tests still have to be met, and anyone outside the exemption needs hours tracked and overtime paid past forty in a week. If the role sits near the line, our breakdown of exempt versus non-exempt classification works through the tests in order.

One more point that catches small employers by surprise: coverage does not depend on company size the way people assume, and individual employee coverage reaches a great deal of small-business work regardless of revenue. The Fair Labor Standards Act guide covers what that means before you write the classification line into a posting.

What to Pay a Lead Product Marketing Writer

There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation code for lead product marketing writer, so any figure presented as the official number for this title is invented. Benchmark against the nearest classifications and pick the one your posting actually describes.

Nearest Federal Classifications, National Medians
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), median annual wages were $76,910 for writers and authors, $90,390 for technical writers, $78,760 for market research analysts and marketing specialists, $77,920 for editors, and $74,750 for public relations specialists. There is no separate classification for product marketing writer at any seniority (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS national estimates).
Nearest classification (BLS OEWS, May 2025)25th percentileMedian75th percentileWhen to benchmark here
Writers and authors$58,230$76,910$101,950The default anchor for any product marketing writing role
Technical writers$70,880$90,390$115,510Developer, API, infrastructure, and security products
Market research analysts and marketing specialists$58,350$78,760$108,310When the role includes real product marketing scope
Editors$57,300$77,920$106,100When review and editorial standards dominate the day
Public relations specialists$56,260$74,750$100,370When launches lean on announcement and press work
Marketing managers$123,020$166,790$216,410Ceiling reference only, and skewed toward large employers

A lead role belongs in the upper half of whichever band you choose, because the medians blend junior and senior work across every industry. Employment for writers and authors is projected to grow 4 percent from 2024 to 2034, about as fast as average, with roughly 13,400 openings a year, so this is a steady market rather than a scarce one. Publish a good-faith range where pay transparency laws apply, and treat the range as a filter rather than a concession.

Screening for Product Judgment, Not Portfolio Polish

Screen for whether the candidate got the product right and chose a message, not for whether the prose is pretty. The reliable instrument is one paid exercise on something you actually sell, with a real constraint and a real deadline, read for accuracy before style.

Ask for the brief and the result alongside every portfolio sample. A sample on its own shows craft and hides judgment, because you cannot see what the writer was asked to do or whether it worked. Two sentences of context turn a portfolio into evidence.

The Unpaid Take-Home Is Costing You the Best Candidates
Senior writers get asked for free work constantly and have largely stopped agreeing. An unpaid multi-day exercise filters for availability rather than quality, and the strongest candidates, who are usually employed, decline first. Keep the exercise under four hours, pay the market rate for it, give real source material instead of a hypothetical, and tell candidates exactly how it will be judged. You will get better work back and a much clearer read on how the person actually thinks.

The other signal worth weighting heavily is the questions asked before the exercise starts. A lead writer who asks who the buyer is, what the competing option is, and what the page is supposed to make someone do has already demonstrated most of the job. One who starts writing immediately has demonstrated the opposite. For adjacent interview material, the copywriter interview questions kit covers craft screening, and the UX writer templates help if the role also touches in-product copy.

Hiring a Lead Writer Without an HR Department

Three things go wrong at small companies hiring this role: the posting describes the wrong job, the evaluation rewards the wrong signal, and onboarding stalls because nobody owns the access and the paperwork. Each one has a fix that costs an hour.

The posting asks for a writer and describes a product marketing manager
This is the single most common reason a lead writer search stalls at a small company. The responsibilities list starts with product pages and launch copy, which is writing, and then quietly adds competitive research, pricing input, launch planning, analyst relations, and sales quota support, which is not. Strong writers read that list and conclude the company has not decided what it is hiring, and strong product marketers read it and conclude the salary band is wrong for the scope. Either way the good candidates self-select out and you are left interviewing people who did not read carefully. Fix it by drawing the line on paper before you post: if positioning, pricing, and launch strategy belong to the role, post a product marketing manager job and pay for one. If they belong to a founder or a product manager, say so in the posting, and the writer job becomes credible again.
You cannot tell good product writing from good writing
Product marketing writing is judged on whether a specific buyer understood a specific thing and did something about it, which a beautiful portfolio can hide completely. Founders reading samples tend to reward voice, rhythm, and clever headlines, none of which are the job. The fastest correction is to change what you ask for: request the brief and the result alongside every sample, so you see what the writer was trying to do and whether it worked. Then run one paid exercise on your real product, with a real constraint and a real deadline, and read it for accuracy first and style second. A writer who asks three sharp questions before starting the exercise has already told you more than the portfolio did.
Onboarding a senior writer is mostly access, context, and paperwork nobody owns
A lead writer is unproductive until they have the accounts, the customer calls, the analytics, the claims history, and permission to talk to customers, and at a small company each of those lives with a different person who is busy. Meanwhile the employment paperwork has to happen anyway: offer letter, confidentiality and IP assignment agreement, handbook acknowledgment, tax forms, equipment, and tool access. FirstHR was built to run that sequence without an HR department. The onboarding wizard assigns each step to the person who actually owns it, e-signature handles the offer and the IP assignment, document management stores the signed copies against the employee profile, and training modules carry the product context a writer needs in week one. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.

Once the offer is signed, the work becomes a repeatable sequence rather than a scramble. Our onboarding checklist covers the general version, and for a senior writer the additions that matter are early customer call access, the claims history, and a named person to approve product statements in week one.

Key Takeaways
Lead product marketing writer covers at least four different jobs, so decide which one you are hiring before writing the posting: solo writer, player-coach, craft specialist, or a product marketing manager under a writing title.
The role owns message hierarchy, launch narratives, product pages, enablement copy, and the voice guide, while pricing, packaging, and launch strategy usually stay with a product marketing manager or founder.
There is no federal occupation code for the title, so benchmark against writers and authors at a $76,910 median with a 25th to 75th band of $58,230 to $101,950 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), and use technical writers at $90,390 for developer products.
A lead with no direct reports is still normally exempt, because the creative professional and administrative routes do not require supervising anyone, while the executive route does.
Production copy written to a fixed brief with no latitude can be non-exempt regardless of how senior the title sounds, and paying a writer as a 1099 contractor while directing their hours and method is a misclassification risk.
Evaluate with one paid exercise under four hours on a real product, judge accuracy before style, and weight the questions a candidate asks before starting more heavily than the portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a lead product marketing writer do?

A lead product marketing writer owns the written expression of the product and the authority over how it is described. The core deliverables are the message hierarchy, launch narratives, website product pages, and the sales and lifecycle assets that carry the same story, plus the voice guide that keeps other people consistent with it. The word lead adds three things to a senior writing job: final editorial authority over product language, direction of freelancers or an agency where they exist, and a seat in launch planning rather than a brief handed down from it. What the role does not own, at most companies, is pricing, packaging strategy, competitive strategy, and the launch calendar itself. Those belong to a product marketing manager or a founder. Write that boundary into the posting and the search gets dramatically easier.

What is the difference between a lead product marketing writer and a product marketing manager?

The difference is who decides the strategy versus who decides the language. A product marketing manager owns positioning, segmentation, pricing input, launch planning, competitive strategy, and sales enablement as a program. A lead product marketing writer owns the words that express all of it: message hierarchy, product pages, launch narrative, enablement copy, and the voice standard. In practice the two overlap heavily at small companies, which is exactly why the posting has to draw the line explicitly. If you need someone to decide which segment to attack and how to price against an alternative, hire a product marketing manager. If the strategy exists and nothing on the website reflects it, hire the writer. Hiring one and describing the other is the most common failure mode in this search, and it usually shows up as a salary band that does not match the responsibilities list.

Is a lead product marketing writer exempt from overtime?

Usually yes, but the exemption comes from duties rather than from the title. Two routes fit this role. The creative professional exemption covers work whose primary duty requires invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a recognized creative field, and the federal regulations name advertising and writing among them. The administrative exemption covers office work directly related to management or general business operations that involves the exercise of discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, which is a natural fit for a writer who sets message hierarchy and approves claims. Either route still requires the salary basis and salary level tests to be met. Having no direct reports does not break the exemption, because only the executive route requires supervising two or more employees. What does break it is a job that turns out to be production copy written to a fixed brief with no latitude. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does a lead product marketing writer make?

There is no federal occupation code for this title, so any number presented as the official figure is invented. Benchmark against the nearest classifications instead. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), writers and authors had a national median annual wage of $76,910, with the 25th percentile at $58,230 and the 75th at $101,950. Technical writers ran higher at a $90,390 median, and market research analysts and marketing specialists sat at $78,760. A lead role sits in the upper half of those bands rather than at the median, because the median mixes junior and senior work across every industry. In practice a lead product marketing writer at a small software company benchmarks against the 75th percentile of writers and authors and above, adjusted for region, and the technical writers band is often the more honest reference for developer-facing products.

What should a lead product marketing writer job description include?

Seven things, in this order. The surfaces the writer owns, listed by name rather than described as content. Who owns the message hierarchy, you or them, stated plainly. The volume: how many products, how many pages, how many launches a year. Whether there are direct reports, freelancers, or an agency to direct. The requirements expressed as demonstrated scope rather than years, since years of writing and years of owning a message are not the same currency. The FLSA classification and whether the role is W-2 or a contract engagement. And a real salary range. Add a short section on what the role is not, which costs four lines and filters out most of the mismatched applications. FirstHR templates follow that structure so the only parts you rewrite are the company-specific ones. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.

Should a lead product marketing writer have direct reports?

Not necessarily, and forcing it is a mistake at a small company. Most lead writer roles at companies without a full marketing department are senior individual contributors who direct freelancers or an agency rather than manage employees, and that structure works well because the scarce skill is judgment about the product story, not people management. Decide honestly before posting, because the answer changes the candidate pool. Writers who want a management track will not take a role with no reports, and writers who want to write will avoid a role that turns out to be half review meetings. If reports are planned but not funded yet, say that: describe the current scope accurately and note the intended path. Also remember that direct reports are not required for exempt classification, since the creative professional and administrative exemptions do not depend on supervising anyone.

How do I test a lead product marketing writer candidate?

Run one paid exercise on your real product, with a real constraint and a real deadline, and read it for accuracy before style. A good exercise asks the candidate to write a product page or a launch narrative for something you actually sell, given a short pack of raw material: a demo recording, two customer quotes, and a competitor page. Pay for the time, keep it under four hours, and judge three things. Did the writer get the product right, meaning no claims you would have to retract. Did they choose a message rather than list features. Did they ask sharp questions before starting, which is the single best predictor of how the role will go. Portfolios are weak evidence on their own because you cannot see the brief or the result, so ask for both alongside every sample.
