The first time I watched a founder post a product engineer opening, the applications split cleanly into two piles that had nothing to do with each other. One pile was mechanical engineers with CAD portfolios and injection molding experience. The other was full-stack developers who wanted to own features. Both groups had read the same posting and reached opposite conclusions.
That is not a candidate problem. Product engineer is one title covering two unrelated jobs, and the posting almost never says which one. The federal wage survey does not settle it either: there is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called product engineer at all, and the closest classifications sit in different major groups, mechanical and industrial engineering on one side and software development on the other.

One Title, Two Different Jobs
A product engineer at a manufacturing company designs physical goods and owns them through tooling, cost, and the production floor. A product engineer at a software company writes code and owns user outcomes. The two share a mindset and share nothing else, which is why a posting that never names the product attracts the wrong half of the market.
The manufacturing meaning came first and is still the larger employer base. The software meaning grew out of small product teams where the person writing the code was also the person talking to customers, and it now appears in job ads that never define it. Either is a real job. Ambiguity between them is what costs you applications.
Physical product company
The original meaning
In manufacturing, a product engineer designs a physical product and owns it through tooling, cost, and the production floor. The posting needs CAD systems, materials, tolerances, and design for manufacturability, or the right candidates will not recognize themselves in it.
Software or SaaS company
The startup meaning
In software, a product engineer is a developer who owns user outcomes: talks to customers, scopes the solution, ships across the stack, and measures the result. The posting has to say that plainly, because otherwise it reads as a generic developer role.
Connected or hybrid product
Both at once
Hardware with firmware and an app needs the two skill sets held together. Decide which side is primary before you write the posting, then name the second side as an interface rather than pretending one person is expert in both.
Adjacent titles you may actually want
Check before posting
If the job is deciding what to build and why, you want a product manager. If it is the interface and the user research, you want a product designer. If it is process capability on the line, you want a manufacturing engineer. Titles cost nothing to fix now.
Write the Disambiguating Sentence First
Before anything else, write one sentence that says what your product is and whether it is physical, digital, or both. Put it at the top of the posting, above the responsibilities. Candidates decide whether to keep reading in about ten seconds, and that single sentence does more filtering than an entire requirements list. It also forces an internal decision that small teams often postpone: whether you are hiring someone to design a thing, to ship software, or to hold both, which is a different and more expensive hire.

A product engineer posting does four jobs at once: it frames what you build, it filters applicants, it protects you legally, and it closes the candidate. Most versions do only the first two, which is why they generate volume without conversion. Here is the full inventory.

The learned professional exemption is the usual route
A degreed engineer doing genuine engineering work generally qualifies as a learned professional: the primary duty requires advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, that knowledge is customarily acquired through a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction, and the work involves consistent exercise of discretion and judgment. Pay must also be on a salary basis at or above the standard salary level, currently $684 per week or $35,568 per year. The 2024 rule that would have raised that floor was vacated by a federal court in Texas in November 2024 and formally rescinded on May 15, 2026, so the older figure is the one in force. Software roles have a second, different exemption
The computer employee exemption covers systems analysts, programmers, software engineers, and similarly skilled workers whose primary duty is systems analysis, program design, development, documentation, testing, or modification. It is the one white-collar exemption with an hourly alternative: at least $27.63 per hour, or the standard salary level on a salary basis. That flexibility is genuinely useful for a part-time or contract-shaped engineering role, but it does not stretch to cover help desk work, hardware repair, or an employee who mainly operates software rather than building it. Engineer and technician are different classifications
The most expensive misclassification in a small engineering team is calling a technician an engineer. An employee whose primary duty is running established tests, building fixtures, maintaining equipment, or following documented procedures under an engineer’s direction usually fails the learned professional duties test, even with a technical degree, because the work does not require the advanced knowledge the exemption is written around. That employee is non-exempt: track hours, pay overtime past forty in a week, and keep the records. The fix is cheap before the hire and expensive after it, because unpaid overtime accrues quietly and surfaces in a claim two years later with liquidated damages attached. Invention assignment belongs in the offer, not the first week
Product engineering roles create intellectual property from day one, so the invention assignment and confidentiality agreement should be named in the job description as a condition of employment and signed on or before the start date. Retroactive assignment is legally messier and personally awkward, and an engineer who learns about it after resigning from another job has every reason to push back. Draft it with counsel and keep it reasonable: several states, California among them under Labor Code section 2870, limit assignment of inventions an employee develops entirely on their own time without company equipment, supplies, facilities, or trade secret information. Scope and the Seniority Ladder
Seniority in a product engineering role is measured by the size of the ambiguity someone can absorb, not by years. A junior engineer executes a defined task well. A senior engineer takes a vague business problem and returns a shipped product plus a defensible account of the tradeoffs.
Writing that distinction into the posting saves you two expensive mistakes: hiring a senior title for junior scope, which produces a resignation in six months, and hiring a junior for senior scope, which produces a project that quietly stalls. What to Pay a Product Engineer
There is no BLS occupation called product engineer, so pay benchmarking has to run through the nearest classifications and then adjust for your market. Use the mechanical or industrial engineering figures for physical products and the software developer figures for software, and treat the percentile spread as more informative than the median.

Two adjustments matter more than the national number. Metro area moves engineering pay substantially, and stage changes the mix: an early company that pays below market on cash has to make the equity concrete rather than gesturing at it.
