Senior Global Account Manager Job Description Templates
6 templates for the company whose biggest customers buy in more than one country: standard, account director, SaaS, manufacturing, professional services, and first global hire. Download as DOCX.
The first global account job description I ever helped write was for a company of thirty-one people. They had not planned to sell internationally. A distributor made an introduction, that customer had a sister plant in another country, and four years later a third of revenue crossed a border while the relationship lived in a shared inbox and the founder's phone.
That pattern is the norm, not the exception. Census Bureau data on U.S. importing and exporting companies shows that 270,014 of the identified U.S. exporters in 2023, or 97.2 percent, were small firms with fewer than 500 employees, together accounting for $588.4 billion in exports. Cross-border revenue reaches small companies long before a global sales organization does.
At FirstHR we write hiring templates for that reader: the owner or operations lead writing a senior posting without a recruiting team behind them. The six below cover the standard cross-border role, a global account director, SaaS, manufacturing and export, professional services, and the first global hire at a small company.
TL;DR
A senior global account manager owns a small portfolio of customers that buy in more than one country, carries the retention and growth number, and directs a virtual team across regions. Most are exempt under the administrative or outside sales test at $684 per week or more. There is no BLS occupation for the title, so benchmark against sales managers at a $148,270 median. Six templates below.
What a Senior Global Account Manager Actually Owns
A senior global account manager owns a small portfolio of multinational customers and answers for those relationships everywhere the customer operates. The scope is defined by jurisdiction, not by headcount: every added country brings a currency, a tax entity, a body of contract law, and a set of holidays.
That is what separates it from the roles it gets confused with. Scope grows in a predictable ladder, and postings go wrong when they borrow the responsibilities of one rung and the pay of another.
Account manager
One customer, one market
Owns a book of accounts inside a single country. Renewals, service issues, and growth in one currency, one legal system, one time zone. The default version of the role and the one most postings describe.
National account manager
One market, many locations
Owns a customer with locations across the country: many buyers, one contract, one set of rules. The complexity is organizational rather than jurisdictional, because the law and the currency do not change.
Global account manager
Many markets, one relationship
Owns a customer that buys in more than one country. Currency, tax, contract law, data rules, and holidays all differ by market, and the customer still expects one price, one standard, and one person who answers.
Senior global account manager
Authority added to scope
The senior title should mean something concrete: fewer and larger accounts, pricing and contract discretion, direction of a virtual team across regions, and a seat in the forecast conversation. If it means none of those, it is inflation.
Decide What Senior Means Before You Post It
Senior is the cheapest word a small company can put in a job title, and experienced account managers discount it accordingly. Make it concrete or drop it. The four things that make a global account role genuinely senior are pricing and discount discretion, authority over contract terms, direction of regional colleagues who do not report to the person, and a seat in the forecast review. Name the ones that apply. If none do, post the standard role at honest pay and keep your credibility.
The comparison worth making explicitly is against the domestic version of the job. Our national account manager templates cover a customer with many locations in one country, where the complexity is organizational rather than jurisdictional, and the two roles should be scoped and benchmarked separately.
What Belongs in the Posting
A senior global account posting does four jobs: it defines a scope the candidate can evaluate, it filters on the right experience, it protects you legally, and it closes someone who is almost certainly employed elsewhere. Most postings only attempt the first.
The parts that define the job
Number of named accounts and combined revenue under management
Regions and countries actually covered
Retention and growth targets, stated as numbers
Who the role reports to and who it directs
The parts that filter applicants
Years on multi-country accounts, not years in sales overall
Contract experience: master agreements and regional addenda
Travel percentage and international trips per year
Time zone expectations for regular calls
The parts that protect you
FLSA classification stated on the posting
Anti-bribery expectations for government and agent contact
Screening duties before shipping or provisioning abroad
Equal opportunity statement and essential functions
The parts that win the hire
Base salary and variable at target, listed separately
How the commission plan actually pays and when
Whether the senior title carries pricing authority
A named person to apply to and a real decision timeline
The most common omission is the account list. Senior candidates want to know how many accounts, how much revenue, which regions, and what the growth target is, because those four numbers tell them whether the job is real. Our guide to writing a job description covers the general structure, and the rest of the catalog sits in hiring templates.

Template 1: Senior Global Account Manager (Standard)
The core cross-border role: named multinational accounts, a written global account plan per customer, a governance cadence, and a retention and growth number.
Senior Global Account Manager Job Description (Standard)
SENIOR GLOBAL ACCOUNT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
Company: __ ([City, State])

ABOUT [COMPANY NAME]
[Company Name] sells [product or service] to [customer type] in [number]
countries. Our largest customers buy in more than one region and expect one
point of contact who can answer for all of them. We are hiring a Senior Global
Account Manager to own that relationship end to end.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Global Account Manager owns a small portfolio of multinational
customers, builds and executes a written global account plan for each one,
coordinates delivery across regions and time zones, and carries a retention and
growth number for the portfolio.

•Own the commercial relationship for [number] named multinational accounts

COMPENSATION AND COMMISSION
Base salary: $_ per year
Variable: $_ at target, paid [quarterly / monthly] on [revenue retained,
net expansion, multi-year renewals]
The commission plan is a separate written document. Nothing in this posting
creates a guarantee of variable earnings.
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE (read before posting)
Classify on duties, not on the word senior. A role that runs a global account
program with real discretion on pricing, contract terms, and account strategy
generally fits the administrative exemption, which requires a salary of at least
$684 per week ($35,568 per year) plus the duties test. A role whose primary duty
is making sales away from your place of business may fit the outside sales
exemption, which carries no salary requirement. If neither fits, the role is
non-exempt and you owe overtime past 40 hours in a workweek, with commission
included in the regular rate. Anyone entertaining or negotiating with government
customers, state-owned enterprises, or agents abroad is inside the scope of the
Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. This is general information, not legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and a short note on the largest
multinational account you have personally owned.
Template 2: Global Account Director
For the seniormost account role, with direct reports, executive sponsorship, and authority over regional coverage. If your version has no direct reports, the account director templates may fit the scope better.
Global Account Director Job Description (Leads a Virtual Account Team)
GLOBAL ACCOUNT DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Company: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Chief Revenue Officer / VP of Global Accounts / Owner]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Base salary: $_ per year, plus [bonus / commission] at $_ target
Direct reports: [number], plus a virtual team of [number] across regions
ABOUT THIS ROLE
This is the seniormost account role at [Company Name]. It carries our largest
multinational relationships and it directs the people who serve them, including
regional account managers who report elsewhere on the org chart.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Global Account Director owns the strategy, the commercial terms, and the
governance for our largest global accounts, directs a virtual account team
across regions, and represents the customer at the executive level inside
[Company Name].
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Own [number] of the largest global accounts, worth $________ combined
•Set the global account strategy and hold regions accountable to it
•Direct a virtual account team: assign coverage by country, set the meeting
cadence, and run a single joint plan rather than [number] regional plans
•[Manage / mentor] [number] account managers as direct reports
•Own executive sponsorship pairing between our leadership and the customer
•Negotiate global master agreements and regional addenda with [legal, finance]
•Chair quarterly business reviews with customer leadership in [regions]

•Escalate and resolve cross-region delivery failures within [timeframe]
•Feed customer requirements into [product, operations, delivery] roadmaps
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•[Number]+ years in enterprise account management, including [number] years
owning accounts across multiple regions
•Experience directing people who do not report to you
•Comfort presenting to a customer C-suite and to your own leadership
•Command of contract structure: master agreements, addenda, [currency, tax,
data transfer] terms across jurisdictions
•Willingness to travel [percentage]% internationally
COMPENSATION AND VARIABLE PAY
Base salary: $_ per year
Variable: $_ at target on [portfolio retention, net revenue expansion,
strategic milestones]. Plan document governs.
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE
A role with direct reports and real authority over account strategy and pricing
is exempt in nearly every case, under the executive or administrative exemption
depending on how much of the day is supervision. Confirm the salary basis test
is met and that the duties are real rather than titular. If total annual
compensation reaches $107,432 with at least $684 per week paid on a salary
basis, the highly compensated employee test applies and the duties requirement
is relaxed. Managers of a global portfolio also carry Foreign Corrupt Practices
Act exposure through third-party agents and distributors, so gifts, hospitality,
and agent approvals belong in a written policy. This is general information, not
legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and one example of a global
account you grew across at least two regions.

Template 3: Senior Global Account Manager (SaaS and Subscription)
For subscription businesses where renewal happens at headquarters but adoption succeeds or fails region by region, with health scores, expansion, and multi-currency billing.
Senior Global Account Manager Job Description (SaaS and Subscription)
SENIOR GLOBAL ACCOUNT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (SAAS)
Company: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [VP of Customer Success / VP of Sales / Founder]
Employment type: Full-time [remote / hybrid in City, State]
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Base salary: $_ per year, plus $_ variable at target
Portfolio: [number] global accounts, $_ in annual recurring revenue
ABOUT THIS ROLE
[Company Name] sells [product] to companies that deploy it in more than one
country. Renewals happen once a year at headquarters, but adoption succeeds or
fails region by region. This role owns both halves.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Global Account Manager owns renewal, expansion, and multi-region
adoption for a portfolio of global subscription customers, and works with
[customer success, support, product] to keep every region live and healthy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Own gross and net revenue retention for [number] global accounts
•Track adoption by region and act on the ones that fall behind
•Run the renewal cycle: [120] days out, with a written renewal plan per account
•Expand through new business units, new countries, and new modules
•Coordinate rollouts across regions with [implementation, support, training]
•Maintain a health score per account and per region, and report on it [monthly]
•Handle multi-currency pricing, regional billing entities, and [annual /
multi-year] contract terms with finance
•Surface data residency and privacy requirements early and route them to
[legal / security] rather than answering them yourself
•Run quarterly business reviews with headquarters and regional stakeholders
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•[Number]+ years in SaaS account management or customer success on enterprise
accounts, including multi-region deployments
•Demonstrated retention and expansion results with numbers you can explain
•Working knowledge of subscription metrics: gross retention, net retention,
expansion rate, time to value
•Comfort with security reviews, data transfer questions, and procurement portals
•Availability for [early / late] calls to cover [EMEA / APAC] time zones
COMPENSATION AND VARIABLE PAY
Base salary: $_ per year
Variable: $_ at target on [gross retention, net expansion, on-time
renewal rate]. Plan document governs.
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE
Most senior SaaS account roles are exempt under the administrative exemption:
office work directly related to business operations, discretion and independent
judgment on matters of significance, and a salary of at least $684 per week
($35,568 per year). A remote role that mostly executes a renewal script without
pricing or contract discretion is a weaker fit, and a weak fit is what gets
tested in an audit. Where the customer deploys in Europe or another regulated
market, cross-border data transfer commitments belong to legal and security, not
to the account manager, and the posting should say so. This is general
information, not legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and your retention numbers for
the last two years.
Template 4: Senior Global Account Manager (Manufacturing and Export)
For manufacturers and distributors: supply agreements, lead times, shipping terms, distributor management, and the screening step before a new destination ships.

SENIOR GLOBAL ACCOUNT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (MANUFACTURING)

Reports to: [VP of Sales / General Manager / Owner]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Base salary: $_ per year, plus commission at $_ target
Travel: [percentage]%, including customer plants and [trade shows]
ABOUT THIS ROLE
[Company Name] manufactures [product] in [City, State] and ships to customers
and distributors in [number] countries. Our global accounts buy through several
plants and several purchasing offices, and they expect consistent pricing, lead
times, and quality documentation across all of them.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Global Account Manager owns multinational manufacturing and
distribution accounts, negotiates global supply agreements, coordinates with
production and logistics on lead times and shipping terms, and grows volume
across the customer plant network.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Own [number] global accounts buying through [number] plants or purchase offices
•Negotiate annual supply agreements, volume tiers, and price adjustments
•Coordinate with [production planning, quality, logistics] on capacity, lead
times, and shipping terms, including agreed Incoterms per shipment

•Attend [trade shows] and visit customer sites in [regions]
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•[Number]+ years in industrial, manufacturing, or distribution sales
•Experience selling into multinational customers through more than one plant
•Working knowledge of export documentation, Incoterms, and freight economics
•Ability to read a specification and hold a technical conversation with
[engineering / quality]
•Valid passport and willingness to travel to [regions]
COMPENSATION AND COMMISSION
Base salary: $_ per year
Commission: $_ at target, paid [monthly / quarterly] on [shipped revenue,
margin, new part qualifications]. Plan document governs.
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE
A senior account manager who spends most of the week traveling to customer sites
to make sales may fit the outside sales exemption, which has no salary
requirement but does require that sales be the primary duty and that the work
happen away from your place of business. Someone running the account from your
office fits the administrative exemption instead, at $684 per week or more. Two
compliance items are not optional in this setting: export controls and sanctions
screening before shipping to a new end user or destination, and Foreign Corrupt
Practices Act discipline around distributors, agents, customs brokers, and
government or state-owned buyers. Put both in the job description and in
onboarding. This is general information, not legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and the export markets you have
sold into personally.
Template 5: Senior Global Account Manager (Professional Services)
For agencies and consultancies running a multi-market client program, with master services agreements, rate cards by market, utilization, and change orders raised in writing.
Senior Global Account Manager Job Description (Professional Services)
SENIOR GLOBAL ACCOUNT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (PROFESSIONAL SERVICES)
Firm: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Managing Partner / Client Services Director / Owner]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Base salary: $_ per year, plus [bonus] at $_ target
Portfolio: [number] global clients, $_ in annual fees
ABOUT THIS ROLE
[Firm Name] delivers [services] to clients who operate in [number] markets. Our
largest clients want one relationship owner who understands the whole program,
not [number] separate country contacts with [number] separate invoices.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Global Account Manager owns the commercial relationship for a small
group of multinational clients, keeps scope, fees, and delivery aligned across
markets, and grows the account into new services and new regions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Own [number] global client relationships worth $________ in annual fees
•Build the annual client plan: objectives, program calendar, budget by market,
growth opportunities, and relationship map
•Negotiate master services agreements, statements of work, and rate cards,
including currency and payment terms per market
•Protect scope and margin: track utilization, flag scope creep in writing, and
raise change orders before the work happens rather than after
•Coordinate delivery leads in [regions] so the client sees one team
•Chair [quarterly] reviews with client leadership and report on results
•Own renewal timing and the competitive rebid calendar
•Grow the account into adjacent services, brands, or markets
•Escalate delivery risk to [the managing partner] early and with a plan
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•[Number]+ years in client services, account management, or business
development at an [agency / consultancy / professional services firm]
•Experience running a multi-market client program
•Command of scope, fees, utilization, and margin, not only relationships
•Strong written communication for plans, reviews, and change orders
•Willingness to travel to client offices in [regions]
COMPENSATION AND VARIABLE PAY
Base salary: $_ per year
Variable: $_ at target on [fee growth, retention, margin, client
satisfaction]. Plan document governs.
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE
A senior client relationship role at a services firm is normally exempt under
the administrative exemption: the work is directly related to management or
general business operations and involves discretion and independent judgment on
matters of significance, at a salary of at least $684 per week ($35,568 per
year). Watch two things. First, if the person also delivers billable client work
most of the week, describe the split honestly, because the primary duty test
looks at the actual day. Second, if the client operates in markets with data
protection rules that differ from yours, route those commitments through legal
rather than letting them be agreed in a client meeting. This is general
information, not legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Firm Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and one client program you grew
across more than one market.
Template 6: Senior Global Account Manager (First Global Hire)
For the small company whose international revenue arrived before the process did. It is honest about the ambiguity and specific about the mandate, which is what senior builders screen for.
Senior Global Account Manager Job Description (First Global Hire, Small Company)
SENIOR GLOBAL ACCOUNT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (FIRST GLOBAL HIRE)
Company: __ ([City, State])
Reports to: [Founder / Owner / VP of Sales]
Employment type: Full-time
FLSA status: Exempt (see classification note)
Base salary: $_ per year, plus [commission] at $_ target
Team: none at hire, with [number] planned in [timeframe]
ABOUT THIS ROLE
International revenue found us before we built a plan for it. [Number] of our
customers now buy from more than one country, and those relationships are
currently split across [sales, support, and me]. This is the first role that
owns them as one book.
Read this honestly: there is no global account playbook here yet. You are
writing it. That is the appeal for the right person and the reason to pass for
everyone else.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Global Account Manager owns every customer that buys from us in more
than one country, builds the account plan and governance model from scratch, and
turns a handful of accidental international accounts into a repeatable program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Take ownership of [number] existing multi-country customers worth $________
•Build the first version of our global account plan template and use it
•Establish a governance cadence with each account: [quarterly] reviews, a named
executive sponsor, and a written joint plan
•Consolidate contracts, pricing, and invoicing that grew up inconsistently
•Set our position on [currency, payment terms, shipping terms, support hours]
in writing, with [finance / operations]
•Work directly with the founder on pricing decisions and exceptions
•Build the first restricted party and end-user screening routine before we
ship or provision in a new country
•Document what works so the second and third hires do not start from zero
•Travel to customer sites [number] times per year
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•[Number]+ years managing enterprise or international accounts
•Experience at a company small enough that you built the process yourself
•Comfort with ambiguity, direct founder contact, and writing things down
•Working knowledge of cross-border commercial terms
•Valid passport and willingness to travel internationally
COMPENSATION AND COMMISSION
Base salary: $_ per year
Commission: $_ at target on [retention, expansion, new country
qualifications]. Plan document governs and will be reviewed at [timeframe].
CLASSIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE NOTE
At a small company the first global account hire usually does qualify for the
administrative exemption, because the discretion is real: pricing, terms, and
account strategy are genuinely delegated. Confirm the salary basis test at $684
per week ($35,568 per year) or more, and revisit the classification if the role
narrows later. Two things small employers get wrong here. First, hiring this
person as a contractor to avoid setup work, when you set the schedule, the
territory, and the method, which describes an employee. Second, hiring someone
resident in another country without local employment, tax, and permanent
establishment advice. This is general information, not legal advice.
EEO STATEMENT
[Company Name] is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable
accommodations for the essential functions of this role.
HOW TO APPLY
Email __ with your resume and a short note on a process you
built from nothing at a small company.
Overtime, Exemptions, and the Senior Title
Most senior global account managers are exempt, but the exemption comes from duties rather than from the title or the salary alone. Three tests are in play, and picking the wrong one is what turns a routine audit into a back-pay calculation.
The usual fit is the administrative exemption, which requires office work directly related to management or general business operations, discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, and a salary of at least $684 per week ($35,568 per year). A role that spends most of the week making sales away from your place of business may fit the outside sales exemption instead, which has no salary requirement at all. A role with genuine direct reports can fit the executive exemption.
Test
Salary requirement
When it fits a global account role
Administrative
$684 per week ($35,568 per year)
The person exercises real discretion on pricing, contract terms, and account strategy from an office or remotely
Outside sales
None
Primary duty is making sales, customarily and regularly away from your place of business, which fits heavy customer-site travel
Executive
$684 per week ($35,568 per year)
The person supervises two or more full-time equivalents and has real authority over hiring and firing decisions
Highly compensated
$107,432 total annual compensation, with $684 per week on a salary basis
A shortcut for well-paid senior roles that meet at least one exempt duty; the full duties test is relaxed
None of the above
Not applicable
Renewal execution on a script with no discretion. Track hours and pay overtime, including commission in the regular rate
Two practical cautions. Commission has to be included in the regular rate when you calculate an overtime premium for anyone non-exempt, which surprises employers who assume a commission plan implies exempt status. And if you are unsure which side a role falls on, our breakdown of exempt versus non-exempt classification works through the tests in order.
Cross-Border Duties That Belong in the Job Description
Four cross-border obligations sit closer to the global account manager than to anyone else at a small company, and all four belong in the posting rather than in an onboarding slide six weeks later. Stating them also filters candidates who would rather you did not ask.
Anti-bribery applies to the account manager, not only the executive
The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act reaches conduct by employees and by third parties acting for you: distributors, agents, customs brokers, and consultants. A global account manager sits closer to that risk than almost anyone else at a small company, because the entertaining, the agent selection, and the negotiation with a state-owned buyer all happen at that desk. Write the expectation into the job description rather than saving it for an annual training slide: gifts and hospitality follow a written policy, agents and intermediaries require approval before engagement, and nothing of value moves to a government official to win or keep business. Then collect a signed acknowledgment during onboarding and keep it on file. A posting that states the standard also filters out candidates who were hoping you would not ask.
Screening happens before the shipment, not after the order
Selling to a new country or a new end user triggers restricted party screening and, depending on the product and destination, export licensing and sanctions questions. The account manager is usually the first person who knows a new destination is coming, which makes screening an account management duty rather than a back-office one. Put it in the responsibilities list explicitly: screen the customer, the end user, and the intermediaries before an order is accepted, and route license questions to compliance or outside counsel instead of deciding them alone. For a small company without a trade compliance function, the practical version is a named checklist, a named owner, and a rule that nothing ships to a new destination until the check is documented. This is general information, not legal advice.
Travel, visas, and the cost you did not budget
A global account role generally means real travel, and the posting should say how much rather than leaving candidates to guess. State the percentage and the number of international trips per year, because those two numbers drive self-selection more than any responsibility bullet. Confirm the practical requirements before the offer: a passport with enough validity remaining, the business visa or travel authorization each destination requires for commercial meetings, and any vaccination or entry rules. Budget the real cost too, including premium fares on long routes, ground time, and the recovery days after them. If the role is exempt, travel time does not create overtime. If you conclude the role is non-exempt, travel time rules under the Fair Labor Standards Act become a live payroll question rather than a theoretical one.
Hiring the person abroad is a different decision entirely
There is a large practical difference between a US-based employee who covers global accounts and an employee resident in another country. The second one raises local employment law, mandatory benefits, payroll registration, income tax withholding, and the risk that their activity creates a taxable permanent establishment for your company in that market. None of those are reasons to avoid it, and plenty of small companies do it successfully, but all of them are reasons to take advice before the offer letter rather than after the first payroll run. If the accounts are global and the coverage model can work from the United States, hiring domestically is the simpler starting point. Decide deliberately and write the location requirement into the posting either way.
The Agent Is the Risk, Not the Employee
Most enforcement exposure at small exporters runs through third parties rather than through staff: the local agent who opens a door, the distributor who handles a government tender, the customs broker who makes a problem disappear. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act reaches conduct by intermediaries acting on your behalf, which means the account manager who selects and manages them is at the center of the control. Require written approval before engaging an agent, diligence on who they are, and a contract with anti-bribery terms. Put the requirement in the job description so it is a condition of the job rather than an afterthought.
What to Pay a Senior Global Account Manager
There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for this job title, so benchmark against the nearest classifications rather than trusting a single aggregate figure. Federal data covers sales managers and several sales representative categories, and a senior global account role generally sits between them.
Nearest BLS Classifications, National Medians
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), sales managers (SOC 11-2022) had a national median annual wage of $148,270, ranging from $73,170 at the tenth percentile to $290,540 at the ninetieth. Technical and scientific wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives (SOC 41-4011) had a median of $104,920 with a ninetieth percentile of $200,440, and sales representatives of services (SOC 41-3091) had a median of $69,990 with a ninetieth percentile of $148,840 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS national estimates).

Two adjustments to make before you publish a number. Global scope carries travel, unsocial call hours, and coordination load that a domestic role does not, and senior candidates price that in. And where pay transparency rules apply, publish a good-faith range: our guide to pay transparency laws covers which states require it, while global compensation strategy covers the harder question of paying consistently across markets.

Screening for the Global Part, Not Just the Account Part
Screen for evidence that the candidate has run an account across borders, not merely sold to a customer that happens to be large. The cleanest way to test it is to ask for one account, one growth story, and the mechanics behind it.
Four questions separate genuine global experience from enterprise experience with an international logo attached. Ask how they split a global account plan between headquarters and regions. Ask how they got a colleague in another region, who did not report to them, to change a commitment date. Ask what they did the first time a customer asked for one global price across markets with different costs. Ask what happened on the account that went wrong.
What to screen
What a strong answer contains
Multi-country ownership
Named regions, revenue by region, and how coverage was divided rather than a headquarters relationship with distant sales attached
Influence without authority
A concrete example of moving a regional colleague or partner, with what was traded and what was escalated
Commercial discretion
Specific pricing or contract decisions the candidate made, and the ones they escalated, with the reasoning for each
Governance discipline
An actual cadence with dates and attendees, plus a written plan the candidate can describe from memory
Compliance instinct
Recognizes agent risk and screening as the account manager’s job, not somebody else’s paperwork
Failure handling
A lost or shrinking account described honestly, with what they would do differently
The reference call matters more here than in most searches, because global account results are slow and easy to narrate generously. Ask a former manager how many countries the account actually covered and who owned the contract. If the role sits alongside a broader sales team, the senior account executive templates and the key account manager templates cover adjacent hires.
Hiring This Role Without an HR Department
Small companies fail this hire in three predictable places: nobody defined which accounts are global, the senior title outruns the compensation plan, and onboarding paperwork arrives with no home. Each has a fix that costs an afternoon.
The global accounts already exist, but nobody owns them
At most small companies international revenue arrives before any plan for it does. A distributor introduces a customer, that customer has a sister plant in another country, and two years later a quarter of your revenue crosses a border while the relationship is split between whoever answered the first email, the support inbox, and the founder. The first global account job description is therefore less a hiring document than a decision document: it forces you to name which customers are global, what the person owns versus what stays with the founder, and what authority comes with the title. Write that before you post. A candidate senior enough to do this work will ask all three questions in the first interview, and a vague answer is what loses them.
The senior title is doing work the compensation plan is not
Senior is the cheapest thing a small company can hand out, which is exactly why candidates discount it. If the title carries pricing discretion, contract authority, direction of regional colleagues, and a seat in the forecast review, say so in the posting in those words. If it does not, the honest move is to post the standard role and pay for it properly rather than to compensate with an adjective. The same honesty applies to money: publish base and variable separately, explain what the variable pays on and when it pays, and state whether the plan changes annually. Blended single numbers read as evasive to experienced account managers, and the strongest of them will already have a plan document from a current employer to compare against.
Onboarding a global role means paperwork nobody has a home for
This hire arrives with a stack that does not fit the standard new-employee folder: a signed commission plan, an anti-bribery policy acknowledgment, a travel and expense policy, a confidentiality agreement covering customer pricing, restricted party screening training, and a handover of account plans and contract calendars from whoever held the relationships before. FirstHR was built for exactly this pattern. The onboarding wizard runs the same sequence for every hire, e-signature captures the commission plan and the policy acknowledgments, document management stores the signed copies against the employee profile with renewal dates attached, and training modules cover anti-bribery and screening orientation before the first customer call. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.
Once the offer is signed, the work becomes a repeatable sequence rather than a scramble. Our onboarding checklist covers the general shape, and for this role specifically the additions are the signed commission plan, the anti-bribery acknowledgment, the travel policy, and a documented handover of account plans and contract calendars.
Key Takeaways
A senior global account manager owns a small portfolio of customers buying in more than one country, and the complexity is jurisdictional rather than organizational: currency, tax, contract law, data rules, and time zones all change per market.
State the number of named accounts, the combined revenue under management, the regions covered, and the growth and retention targets, because those four numbers are how senior candidates judge whether the job is real.
Make the senior title concrete: pricing discretion, contract authority, direction of regional colleagues, and a forecast seat. If none apply, post the standard role and pay for it honestly.
Most of these roles are exempt under the administrative test at $684 per week ($35,568 per year) or the outside sales test with no salary requirement, but classification follows the actual duties, not the title.
There is no BLS occupation for the title, so benchmark against sales managers at a $148,270 median and technical sales representatives at $104,920 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), and publish base and variable separately.
Write the cross-border duties into the posting: anti-bribery expectations around agents and government buyers, restricted party and end-user screening before a new destination, and the real travel percentage.
A global account hire arrives with a stack no standard folder fits: a commission plan, an anti-bribery acknowledgment, a travel policy, and a handover of account plans. FirstHR runs the same onboarding sequence every time, with e-signature for the plan and the policies, document storage against each employee profile, and renewal dates tracked so nothing lapses quietly. Frequently Asked Questions
What does a senior global account manager do?
A senior global account manager owns a small portfolio of customers that buy from you in more than one country, and carries the retention and growth number for that portfolio. The day splits four ways: building and maintaining a written global account plan per customer, mapping relationships across headquarters and regional subsidiaries, negotiating master agreements and regional pricing, and coordinating a virtual team so the customer receives one standard of service in every market. The senior part should add authority rather than seniority alone: fewer and larger accounts, discretion over pricing and contract terms, direction of regional colleagues who do not report to them, and a seat in the forecast review. Travel is usually a real component and belongs in the posting as a percentage plus a trip count.
How is a global account manager different from a national account manager?
The difference is jurisdictional, not just geographic. A national account manager handles a customer with many locations inside one country, so the complexity is organizational: many buyers, one contract, one currency, one body of law. A global account manager handles a customer that buys across borders, which adds currency exposure, tax and invoicing entities, contract law that differs by market, data transfer rules, tariffs and shipping terms, local holidays, and time zones that make a single meeting cadence hard to sustain. The commercial ask also changes. Multinational customers usually want consistent pricing and one service standard across markets, and delivering that requires directing colleagues in regions who do not report to the account manager. Benchmark and scope the two roles separately rather than treating global as national with more flights.
Is a senior global account manager exempt from overtime?
Usually yes, but classify on duties rather than on the title. The administrative exemption is the common fit: office work directly related to management or general business operations, discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, and a salary of at least $684 per week ($35,568 per year) under the current Fair Labor Standards Act rules. A role that spends most of the week making sales away from your place of business may instead fit the outside sales exemption, which carries no salary requirement at all. A role with direct reports can fit the executive exemption. If the person mostly executes renewals on a script with no pricing or contract discretion, none of the tests fit cleanly, and the safe answer is non-exempt with hours tracked and commission included in the regular rate when you calculate the overtime premium. This is general information, not legal advice.
How much does a senior global account manager make?
There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation with that exact title, so any figure presented as the national average for it comes from a compensation aggregator rather than from federal data. Benchmark against the nearest classifications instead. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), sales managers (SOC 11-2022) had a national median annual wage of $148,270, from $73,170 at the tenth percentile to $290,540 at the ninetieth. Technical and scientific wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives (SOC 41-4011) had a median of $104,920, non-technical representatives (SOC 41-4012) a median of $72,080, and sales representatives of services (SOC 41-3091) a median of $69,990. A senior individual contributor on global accounts usually benchmarks above the representative bands and below the sales manager median, with total earnings pushing higher. Publish base and target variable separately.
What should a senior global account manager job description include?
Seven things, and most postings miss the first three. State the number of named accounts and the combined revenue under management. State the regions and countries actually covered. State the retention and growth targets as numbers. Then add the qualifications that filter honestly, which means years on multi-country accounts rather than years in sales overall, plus contract experience with master agreements and regional addenda. State the travel percentage and the international trip count. State the classification and the cross-border duties, including anti-bribery expectations and screening before shipping or provisioning in a new market. Finally, publish base salary and variable at target separately, explain what the variable pays on, and name a real person to apply to with a real decision timeline. The six templates on this page follow that structure.
Should a small business hire a global account manager at all?
Often yes, and earlier than founders expect. Census Bureau data on U.S. importing and exporting companies shows that 270,014 of the identified U.S. exporters in 2023, or 97.2 percent, were small firms with fewer than 500 employees, and those firms accounted for $588.4 billion in exports, about 33 percent of the value from identified companies. Cross-border revenue is not a large-company phenomenon. The practical trigger is not a revenue threshold but a structural one: when a customer buys from you in more than one country and expects consistent pricing and service, the relationship needs a single owner or it fragments. Before posting, decide which customers are in scope, what the person owns versus what stays with the founder, and what authority the senior title carries. Applicant tracking is coming soon to FirstHR.
Can I hire a global account manager who lives outside the United States?
You can, but it is a materially different decision from hiring a US-based employee who covers global accounts, and it should be made before the offer letter rather than after the first payroll run. An employee resident in another country brings local employment law, mandatory benefits and notice periods, payroll registration, income tax withholding, and the risk that their commercial activity creates a taxable permanent establishment for your company in that market. Hiring them as an independent contractor to avoid that setup is the most common shortcut and the most expensive one, because if you set the schedule, the territory, and the method, most jurisdictions will treat the person as an employee regardless of the contract. Take local advice, and if the coverage model can work from the United States, that is the simpler starting point.
