The first technical architect posting I was ever asked to review was a list of forty technologies and one sentence about the job. It had been copied from a large enterprise, pasted into a company of eighteen people, and it worked exactly as badly as you would expect. The applicants could recite the stack. Not one of them had ever had to defend a design decision to somebody paying for it.
The problem was not the writing. It was that nobody had decided what the role owned. Technical architect is one title covering at least four different jobs, and a posting that does not say which one it means will attract candidates for all four and fit none of them.

TL;DR
A technical architect job description has to name the layer the role owns, the decisions it makes alone, and how hands-on it stays. There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation with this title. The nearest one, computer network architects, showed a national median of $134,050 (May 2025). Six templates below, downloadable as DOCX.
One Title, Four Different Jobs
Technical architect is not a defined role, it is a family of roles that differ by scope. Before writing anything, decide whether you are hiring the person who owns how one system is built, the person who owns one customer solution, the person who owns application internals, or the person who governs a technology portfolio.
The distinction matters commercially, not just semantically. The four versions attract different candidates, sit at different pay levels, and fail in different ways when the posting is vague. Small companies almost always want the first one and frequently post the fourth by accident.
Technical architect
Owns how one system is built
The hands-on design owner for a system or product line. Sets patterns, reviews designs before build, and usually still writes code. This is the role most small companies mean when they post the title, and the one the templates below are written for.
Solution architect
Owns one solution or one deal
Scoped to a specific business problem or customer engagement, often with a pre-sales component. Heavy on requirements, sizing, and stakeholder work. If the role sits close to sales, post it as a solution architect instead.
Software architect
Owns application internals
Focused inside the application: module boundaries, frameworks, code structure, and the standards the codebase is held to. Narrower than a technical architect and almost always attached to one engineering team.
Enterprise architect
Owns the portfolio, not the build
Sets standards across every system a company runs and governs the technology portfolio. It is a governance role that needs a portfolio to govern, so it rarely makes sense below a few hundred employees.
Write the Layer, Not the Title
Candidates cannot infer scope from a title that means four things. One line near the top of the posting fixes it: state the system, the layer, and the authority. Something as plain as "you own the integration layer across our five business systems and you decide the patterns" tells a senior candidate more than three paragraphs of responsibilities. If the role is closer to a specific customer engagement, use the solution architect templates. If it lives entirely inside one application, use the software architect templates.
What Belongs in the Posting
A technical architect job description does four jobs at once: it sells the problem, it filters people who match keywords instead of the work, it protects you legally, and it closes a candidate who is probably not job hunting. Most postings only attempt the second, which is why they produce volume and no fit.

The most common omission at small companies is authority. Candidates want to know what they get to decide without asking, what needs sign-off, and how long that sign-off takes. Leaving it out reads as a company that has not decided, and experienced architects have all worked somewhere that had the title without the authority. Do not assume a fractional architect is automatically an independent contractor.
Under the economic reality analysis used for the Fair Labor Standards Act, the
question is whether the worker is in business for themselves or economically
dependent on you. Someone who serves several clients, supplies their own tools,
sets their own hours, and works to a defined deliverable looks like a
contractor. Someone who works your schedule, attends your standups, uses your
equipment, takes direction on method, and has no other clients looks like a

Overtime and the Computer Employee Exemption
A technical architect is exempt from overtime in nearly every case, under the computer employee exemption. That exemption covers computer systems analysts, programmers, software engineers, and other similarly skilled workers whose primary duty is systems analysis or the design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs.
The rule sits at 29 CFR 541.400, and the Department of Labor summarizes the pay and duties tests in its fact sheet on computer-related occupations. The pay test is met by a guaranteed salary or fee of at least $684 per week, or by an hourly rate of at least $27.63 per hour. The regulation states plainly that job titles are not determinative, which is the sentence most classification arguments end on.
The computer employee exemption has two pay routes
Most architects are exempt under the computer employee exemption, which covers computer systems analysts, programmers, software engineers, and other similarly skilled workers in the computer field. Unusually, it offers two ways to meet the pay test: a guaranteed salary or fee of at least $684 per week, or an hourly rate of at least $27.63 per hour. That hourly route exists in almost no other exemption, and it is what lets a genuinely hourly senior engagement stay exempt. The duties test still has to be met on its own terms: the primary duty must be systems analysis, or the design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of systems or programs. Job titles are not determinative
The regulation says so directly, and it is the sentence that decides most disputes. Calling someone a technical architect does not make them exempt, and calling someone a senior engineer does not make them non-exempt. What matters is the primary duty actually performed week to week. The exemption also has hard edges worth knowing: employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware are outside it, and so are employees whose work is merely dependent on computers rather than being systems design work. A help desk lead who was promoted to architect on the org chart but still spends the week resolving tickets is a classification problem waiting to surface. Two exemptions can apply at once
An architect who leads a team frequently qualifies under both the computer employee exemption and the executive exemption, and an architect who advises the business on operations may also qualify under the administrative exemption. Overlap is fine and it is useful: if the role shifts over time and the design work shrinks, a second qualifying route keeps the classification stable. The executive exemption requires management as the primary duty, direction of at least two full-time employees or the equivalent, and genuine weight given to the architect’s hiring and firing recommendations. The administrative exemption requires office work directly related to management or general business operations, plus the exercise of discretion and independent judgment on significant matters. Note which route you are relying on and why.
Fractional does not mean contractor
Part-time architecture help is one of the most common uses of the title at a small company, and it is also where classification goes wrong most often. The test is economic reality, not the label on the agreement. A worker who serves multiple clients, supplies their own equipment, sets their own hours, invests in their own business, and delivers to a defined outcome sits on the contractor side. A worker who attends your standups, follows your schedule, uses your laptop, takes direction on method, and has no other clients is functionally a part-time employee, and a contract calling them a contractor will not fix that. The consequences of getting it wrong run to back overtime, unpaid employment taxes, and penalties. Where the answer is close, ask counsel before the engagement starts rather than after.

Requirements Worth Naming, and the Ones to Cut
Name the two or three platforms the role genuinely depends on and cut the rest. A long technology list is the single strongest signal that the company has not decided what the job is, and senior candidates read it that way.
Certifications deserve a specific decision rather than a default. Mark vendor certifications as preferred unless a partner tier or a client contract actually requires them, in which case say so and say which level, because that turns a nice-to-have into a real filter candidates can act on.

One requirement worth adding that most postings omit: written communication. Architecture influence travels as documents, and an architect who cannot write a decision record that a skeptical engineer will accept will not change anything, whatever the org chart says.
What to Pay a Technical Architect
There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called technical architect, so the honest approach is to benchmark against the nearest classifications and adjust for your layer, industry, and location. The federal data codes most architecture work into a handful of computer occupations, none of which carries the title.
Nearest BLS Classifications, National Medians
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), median annual wages were $134,050 for computer network architects, $139,500 for database architects, $135,980 for software developers, and $116,580 for computer occupations, all other, the residual category where many architect titles are coded. Computer and information systems managers had a median of $175,140 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS national estimates).

Spread matters more than the median at this level. Within computer network architects, annual wages ran from $79,900 at the tenth percentile to $104,620 at the twenty-fifth, $168,200 at the seventy-fifth, and $202,680 at the ninetieth, against employment of 179,200 in 2024, with the occupation projected to grow much faster than average through 2034 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Publish a good-faith range where pay transparency laws apply, and pick your band by the layer and the authority you are actually granting.

Screen architects on judgment under constraint, because that is the whole job. The most reliable exercise is a short written one: hand the candidate a real constraint from your system and ask for a one-page design that names the tradeoffs and the option they rejected.
Follow it with a conversation where you push back on the design. What you are watching for is not whether the candidate is right, it is whether they can hold a position under pressure, change it when the argument is good, and tell the difference. That is the daily work of the role, and no certification tests for it.
The Two Failure Modes to Screen Out
The first is the architect who has never lived with a decision. Designs look clean when somebody else operates them, so ask what broke in production and what they changed afterward.
