The first engineering technician job description I ever helped write was a list of complaints. A twelve-person hardware company had two engineers who were building their own test fixtures, driving to the supply house for connectors, and writing test reports after dinner. The posting they drafted was every one of those annoyances in bullet form.

It attracted nobody, and the reason was obvious once you read it as a candidate. A technician cannot picture a job made of somebody else's frustrations. They can picture a bench, a test rig, a stack of drawings, and a person who will answer their questions. Rewriting the same job that way filled it in three weeks.

What an Engineering Technician Does

An engineering technician performs the applied technical work that turns an engineer's design into something measurable: building prototypes and fixtures, running test procedures, recording data, calibrating equipment, marking up drawings, and documenting what happened. The engineer decides. The technician finds out.

That split is the reason the role exists at all. Design time is the scarcest resource in a small engineering group, and every hour an engineer spends soldering a harness or chasing a purchase order is an hour the product does not move. A technician converts expensive judgment time back into cheap execution time.

The federal government does not publish a single occupation called engineering technician. The Bureau of Labor Statistics splits the work into seven named disciplines plus an all other category, and each carries a different median wage, a different certification landscape, and a different candidate pool. That is why the first decision in your posting is which discipline you are hiring.

Post the Discipline, Not the Category
A posting titled Engineering Technician draws applications from every discipline and fits none of them. A posting titled Electrical Engineering Technician or Civil Engineering Technician tells a candidate in three words whether the job is theirs, and it matches what people actually search for when they look for work. Put the discipline in the title, keep the general responsibilities in the body, and you will trade application volume for application fit. Volume is not the constraint in this market.

Technician, Technologist, Engineer, or Drafter

These four titles describe different jobs with different pay bands, different overtime treatment, and in some states different legal standing. Choosing the wrong one is the most common structural mistake in a technical posting, and it costs you either the wrong applicants or a classification problem.

Engineering technician
Applies established methods
Builds, tests, measures, and documents under engineering direction. Usually an associate degree or equivalent experience. Non-exempt in nearly every case, because the role does not require a specific course of academic training as a condition of entry.
Engineering technologist
Four-year applied degree
Holds a bachelor of engineering technology and works closer to design and process ownership. BLS folds technologists and technicians into the same occupation codes, so wage data does not separate them and neither does most of the market.
Engineer
Owns the design
Holds an engineering degree, exercises independent technical judgment, and can qualify for the learned professional exemption. In many states the job title itself is regulated, and only a licensed PE may seal drawings for public work.
Drafter
Produces the drawings
Converts designs into technical drawings and models. BLS classifies drafters in a separate group from technicians, and the skill set is narrower and more software-centered. Post a drafter role if the job is drawings rather than benches.

Two of these overlap in practice. A technologist with a four-year applied degree often does work indistinguishable from a junior engineer, and BLS groups technologists and technicians together in the same occupation codes, so the wage data cannot separate them. If your job is drawings and models rather than benches and test data, post the drafter role instead, and if it is genuinely design ownership, use the engineer templates.

What Belongs in the Posting

A technician job description has to do four things: describe the actual work concretely enough to picture, filter out people who cannot do it, state the classification and safety realities honestly, and give a candidate a reason to apply today. Most postings do the first badly and skip the rest.

Travel, on-call, or customer-site expectations
The parts that protect you
FLSA classification stated as non-exempt and hourly
Overtime expectations during build and test pushes
Safety training the role requires before day one
Equal opportunity statement and essential functions
The parts that win the hire
An hourly rate or a good-faith range
Paid training and certification support
A written review date tied to skill milestones
A named person to contact and a real timeline

The most common omission is the split between bench, field, and floor. A civil technician who expected office CAD work and got three days a week in the mud will not last the season, and a bench technician who expected quiet lab work and got a noisy production floor will not either. Which Template Should You Use?

Pick by discipline first, then by seniority. Five of the six templates map to a discipline, and the sixth is written for a small shop making its first technician hire, where the job is broad by necessity and the training plan matters more than the requirements list.

CLASSIFICATION NOTE (read before posting)

Engineering technician roles are usually non-exempt under the FLSA. The learned
professional exemption is limited to professions where specialized academic
training is a standard prerequisite for entering the profession, and a role
that can be filled with an associate degree, an apprenticeship, or experience
generally does not meet that test. Paying a salary does not change the answer
because the duties test fails first. If this technician's day is genuinely

CLASSIFICATION AND LICENSING NOTE

Civil engineering technicians are non-exempt in nearly every case. The work is
performed under the direction and seal of a licensed professional engineer, and
that supervision is one of the facts that keeps the role outside the learned
professional exemption. Field days run long, so budget for overtime rather than
assuming a salary covers it. Only a licensed PE may seal drawings and offer
engineering services to the public in most states, and job titles containing

Exempt or Non-Exempt? Almost Always Non-Exempt

Engineering technicians are non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act in nearly every case, which means hourly pay and overtime past 40 hours in a workweek. The exemption fails on duties, not on pay, so no salary figure fixes it.

The controlling language sits in the regulation defining the learned professional exemption, which restricts the exemption to professions where specialized academic training is a standard prerequisite for entrance, and states that it is not available for occupations that customarily may be performed with only the general knowledge acquired by an academic degree in any field, with knowledge acquired through an apprenticeship, or with training in the performance of routine mental, manual, mechanical, or physical processes. The Department of Labor summarizes the same tests in its fact sheet on the professional exemption.

The duties test fails before the salary test matters
The learned professional exemption asks whether the advanced knowledge the job requires is customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. The regulation is explicit that the exemption is not available for occupations that can be performed with only the general knowledge from a degree in any field, with knowledge from an apprenticeship, or with training in routine mental, manual, mechanical, or physical processes. An engineering technician role that lists an associate degree or equivalent experience has answered that question in the posting. Once the duties test fails, the salary level is irrelevant: you can pay a technician $90,000 a year and still owe overtime on hour 41. Classify as non-exempt, track hours, and pay time and a half. Job titles do not create exemptions
Small manufacturers call technicians engineers all day long, in conversation, on business cards, and eventually on offer letters. The Department of Labor does not care about the word. Classification turns on the actual primary duty, and a person who builds, tests, measures, and documents under an engineer's direction is performing applied technical work, not independent professional work. The reverse trap exists too: calling a genuinely independent degreed engineer a technician to keep them hourly is legal but expensive, since you now owe overtime you could have structured differently. Decide the classification from the duties, write it into the job description, and keep the analysis on file so you can explain it later.
Overtime is a budget line, not a surprise
Technician work concentrates around events: a prototype build, a qualification test, a plant startup, a construction season, a customer deadline. Those weeks run long by design, which means overtime is a predictable cost rather than an exception. Two practical consequences.
