The first lead data engineer job description I ever reviewed for a founder had one real sentence in it. Everything else was a stack list. It said the person would lead the data team, then described the work of a mid-level engineer, then attached a range twenty percent above what the company had ever paid. Three strong candidates read it and passed.
The problem was not the writing. It was that nobody had decided what the word lead meant at that company: whether the person would manage anyone, what they were allowed to decide without asking, and how much of the week would be spent in code. Those three answers are the job description. The rest is formatting.

What a Lead Data Engineer Actually Owns
A lead data engineer owns the direction of the data platform, not just the systems inside it. That is the whole difference from a senior engineer: a senior picks the best solution to the problem in front of them, and a lead decides which problems get solved next and defends that choice to the rest of the company.
At a company with fewer than a hundred people the role stays deeply hands-on. There is no architecture committee to escalate to and no platform team to delegate infrastructure to, so the lead writes code most of the week and leads in the margins around it. Say that split out loud in the posting.
Direction, not tickets
The roadmap is theirs to propose
A senior engineer picks the best solution to the problem in front of them. A lead decides which problems the platform solves next quarter, writes that down, and defends it when sales wants a one-off export instead.
Contracts between teams
The interfaces others depend on
Schemas, metric definitions, freshness targets, and who is allowed to break what. These are the decisions that quietly determine whether the rest of the company trusts a number, and they need one accountable owner.
Reliability and cost
Two numbers with their name on them
Uptime and freshness for critical tables, and the cloud bill. A lead who cannot tell you what the platform costs per month and which query drives it is a senior engineer with a longer title.
The engineers around them
Through review, not through reviews
Design review, pairing, written feedback, and interview scorecards. Whether formal performance reviews come with the job is the single most important thing to settle before you write the posting.
Write What the Role Does Not Own
Ownership language is cheap. Owns the data roadmap means nothing until you write the boundary next to it. The three items that most often stay with the hiring manager are headcount budget, compensation decisions, and formal performance reviews, and a candidate who assumes they come with the title will be unhappy by month three. Two lines in the posting fix it: here is what you decide alone, and here is what you propose and I approve.
Lead, Staff, or Manager: Pick the Fork Before You Post
Lead, staff, and manager are three different jobs that small companies routinely advertise as one. The fork is decided by two questions: how many people report to this person, and what percentage of the week is hands-on. Answer those and the title picks itself.
Getting it wrong is expensive in a specific way. A strong individual contributor hired into a management job leaves within a year, and a manager hired into an individual contributor job either creates process nobody asked for or quietly stops managing. Both outcomes cost you the most expensive hire on the team.

The single most common omission is the current state. Candidates at this level want to know what they are inheriting: whether a warehouse exists, how much reporting is manual, what breaks weekly, and what the platform costs. Vagueness there reads as a company that has not looked, and the strongest applicants price that risk into their answer. Overtime and the Exemption Tests
A lead data engineer is an exempt salaried employee in essentially every version of the role, but which exemption you rely on depends on the duties. Hands-on leads sit under the computer employee exemption, and leads whose primary duty has become management sit under the executive exemption.
The computer employee rule is set out in the federal regulation on computer employees, and the Department of Labor summarizes the duty test in its fact sheet on computer-related occupations. The management path runs through the separate regulation on executive employees, which adds the requirement to direct two or more full-time employees.
The computer employee exemption covers the hands-on lead
For a lead who still writes code, the relevant test is the computer employee exemption. It requires compensation on a salary basis of at least $684 per week, or an hourly rate of at least $27.63, plus a primary duty of systems analysis or the design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of computer systems and programs. A data engineering lead clears the duty test comfortably, and any realistic salary for the role clears the pay floor several times over. The caution is at the edges: work that merely uses computers heavily, without systems analysis or programming as the primary duty, does not qualify. A lead whose week is mostly pulling numbers on request is closer to that edge than the title suggests. This is general information, not legal advice.
Direct reports move you to the executive exemption
Once the primary duty becomes management, the executive exemption is the cleaner basis. It requires a salary of at least $684 per week, a primary duty of managing the enterprise or a customarily recognized department or subdivision, customary and regular direction of the work of two or more full-time employees or their equivalent, and either the authority to hire and fire or recommendations on hiring and firing that are given particular weight. Note the two-employee floor. A lead with a single direct report does not satisfy it, which is one more reason to be precise about team size in the posting rather than writing team leadership as an aspiration.
Equity is not salary and titles are not duties
Two mistakes show up repeatedly at small companies. The first is treating an equity grant as part of the salary basis test: it is not, and only the guaranteed cash salary counts toward the weekly floor. The second is classifying on the offer letter instead of the week. If you write lead on the title and the person spends the year taking tickets, the exemption still has to be defended on duties, and the same is true in reverse for someone doing lead work under a senior title. Some states apply their own computer professional rules with higher pay thresholds than the federal floor, so confirm your state before you post. This is general information, not legal advice.
Say which exemption you are relying on
Writing exempt on the posting is standard, and it tells a candidate the job is salaried rather than hourly. Writing down internally which exemption you are relying on, and why, is the part that matters if the classification is ever questioned. Keep a short file note for each exempt role: the exemption, the primary duty that supports it, the salary, and the date you decided. It takes ten minutes at offer time and it is the only record that exists when someone asks two years later.
