The first time a small company writes a senior database engineer job description, it is almost always a reaction. A report that used to load in two seconds now takes four minutes, or a restore gets attempted and nobody is certain the backup is complete, and suddenly the data layer stops being background infrastructure and becomes the thing that could end the business.

That is a hard hire to make, because you are recruiting someone more expert in this specialty than anyone who will interview them. The market is not enormous either: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 7,800 openings a year for database administrators and architects over the 2024 to 2034 decade, against roughly 4 percent employment growth. You are competing for a small pool with companies that already know how to describe the work.

BLS has no database engineer occupation, so benchmark against database administrators at a $104,620 median and database architects at $139,500 (OEWS, May 2025). Six templates below.

What Makes a Database Role Senior

A database role is senior when the person owns outcomes instead of tasks: the schema design, the recovery objectives, and the migration plan are theirs to decide and theirs to defend. Years of experience is the weakest signal on that list, and it is the one most postings lead with.

The practical test is what happens at three in the morning. If the answer is that this person gets called and everyone else waits, the role is senior regardless of the title. If the answer is that they call someone else, it is not, no matter how many years are on the resume.

Mid-level database engineer
Owns tasks
Writes queries and migrations that someone else reviews, follows a runbook during an incident, and escalates decisions about the schema. Reliable inside a system another person designed.
Senior database engineer
Owns outcomes
Owns availability, recovery, and schema design for named systems. Decides the index strategy and the migration plan, carries the escalation, and is judged on whether the data stays correct and fast.
Lead or staff engineer
Owns the standard
Sets conventions across teams, reviews other people's data designs, and chooses technologies the company lives with for years. Influence is measured in other engineers, not in tickets closed.
Data architect
Owns the shape of the whole estate
Designs how systems relate: warehouses, integrations, retention, governance. Further from the query plan and closer to the roadmap. A different job, not simply a higher grade of the same job.
Write the Ownership Block Before the Responsibilities
Every template on this page opens with a scope of ownership section: systems, data volume, availability target, recovery point and recovery time objectives, on-call rotation, and whether the person is the sole owner. Fill that in first. If you cannot answer those six questions, you are not ready to post, and the discussion you need to have internally is worth more than the posting. Senior candidates read that block and decide within thirty seconds whether to keep reading.

Senior Engineer, Lead, Staff, or Architect

These four titles describe different scopes, not different amounts of skill, and the industry uses them inconsistently enough that you have to define yours in the posting. The one thing you cannot do is pick the grandest title you can afford and hope the candidate fills in the meaning.

Title choice also affects where your pay benchmark comes from. There is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation called database engineer at all, so the nearest classifications do the work. O*NET, which republishes the federal wage survey, lists Database Engineer as a job title reported under database administrators, and lists Database Developer and Data Engineer under database architects.

What Belongs in a Senior Posting

A senior posting does four jobs: it states scope precisely enough that the right people recognize themselves, it filters the applicants who cannot do the work, it protects you legally, and it closes a candidate who almost certainly has other options. Most small-company postings do only the second.

The omission that costs the most is the pay range. Senior engineers in a small candidate pool treat a missing range as a signal that the number is low or undecided, and many will not spend an hour finding out. Fractional does not automatically mean independent contractor. If you control
the schedule, the tools, the methods, and the sequence of the work, you are
likely directing an employee, and a part-time employee is entitled to minimum
wage, overtime past forty hours in a week unless a genuine exemption applies,
and the same payroll treatment as anyone else. If the engagement really is a

Overtime and the Computer Employee Exemption

A senior database engineer is normally exempt from overtime under the computer employee exemption, but that exemption has two tests and a role has to pass both. Unlike the teaching exemption, there is no free pass on pay: the compensation floor applies.

The rule is set out in the federal regulation on computer employees as exempt professionals, which requires a salary at the standard weekly level of $684 per week or an hourly rate of at least $27.63, plus a primary duty of systems analysis, design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs. The Department of Labor covers the same ground in Fact Sheet 17E on computer-related occupations, which notes that employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware, and employees whose work merely depends on computers, are outside the exemption.

The computer exemption has two tests, and you must pass both
The federal rule on computer employees sets a compensation floor and a duties test, and a role has to clear both. The floor is the standard weekly salary level, currently $684 per week, or at least $27.63 per hour if the person is paid hourly. The 2024 rule that would have raised the salary level was vacated by a federal court in November 2024 and formally rescinded on May 15, 2026, so the $684 figure still governs. The duties side requires a primary duty of systems analysis, or the design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs. The regulation says plainly that job titles do not determine exempt status, which is exactly why writing the real duties into the posting is worth the time. Not every database job clears the duties test
A senior engineer who designs schemas, plans migrations, and builds automation is doing the analysis and design work the exemption describes.
