What Senior Actually Means in This Title
Senior in operations means scope of ownership and decision authority, not years of experience. The practical test is whether the engineer decides which systems exist and how they are built, or whether they maintain systems that somebody else decided on.
This distinction matters more than usual because operations titles inflate faster than most. A company with one infrastructure person often calls them senior regardless of the work, so experienced candidates have learned to ignore the word and read the responsibilities instead.

The clearest senior marker in operations is a shrinking amount of manual work over time. Someone who personally handles every deployment is valuable and busy, but the senior version of that person deleted the manual step a year ago and moved on to the next one.

Senior operations people take command during an outage: they coordinate, communicate to non-technical stakeholders, and hold the timeline. Then they write the postmortem and drive the corrective work to completion, which is the part most postings forget to ask for.

At a small company the senior operations hire is usually the only person who can evaluate their own architecture choices. Say in the posting what they decide alone, what they decide with you, and what needs a founder sign-off, because that boundary is what a senior candidate is actually screening for.
Describe the Domain, Not the Task List
The fastest way to make a senior posting credible is to replace task bullets with ownership statements. Instead of listing patching, backups, and monitoring as separate chores, say that the engineer owns the reliability of production and sets the standards for how it is provisioned, observed, and recovered. Then name the constraints: the size of the team, the current state of the infrastructure, and what has been deferred. Senior candidates are far more attracted to an honest description of a mess they can fix than to a polished list that tells them nothing about the job.

Overtime and the Computer Employee Exemption
Most senior operations engineers are exempt from overtime, but the exemption rests on duties rather than on the title or the salary. The relevant test for technical operations roles is the computer employee exemption, and it is the only exemption that accepts an hourly rate as well as a salary.
The rule is set out in the federal regulation on computer employees as exempt professionals, which requires either $684 per week on a salary or fee basis or $27.63 per hour, plus a primary duty of systems analysis, or the design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs. The Department of Labor summarizes the same test in Fact Sheet 17E on computer-related occupations.
The computer exemption has two pay routes
Most exempt classifications require a weekly salary. The computer employee exemption is the one place where an hourly rate also works: the regulation allows either at least $684 per week on a salary or fee basis, or at least $27.63 per hour. That flexibility is useful for a fractional or part-time senior engineer, because you can pay hourly without losing the exemption, which you cannot do under the executive or administrative tests. The pay route is only half the test. The primary duty still has to be systems analysis, or the design, development, documentation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs, or a combination requiring the same level of skill. Operating a system is not designing one
This is the trap in the word operations. The regulation explicitly excludes employees whose work is highly dependent on computers and computer software but who are not primarily engaged in computer systems analysis and programming or similarly skilled computer-related work. A senior engineer who architects the platform, writes the automation, and modifies the systems is on the right side of that line. A role built around watching dashboards, triaging alerts, and executing runbooks that someone else wrote is closer to the excluded category, whatever the title says. Write the posting for the duties you will actually assign, then classify from the same document. If the answer is non-exempt, track hours and pay overtime past forty in a week. High pay is not automatic exemption
The highly compensated employee rule sets total annual compensation at $107,432, above which the duties test relaxes: the employee needs only to customarily and regularly perform at least one of the exempt duties of an executive, administrative, or professional employee. Senior operations salaries frequently clear that number, so the shortcut is tempting. Two limits matter. The rule requires office or non-manual work, which excludes maintenance trades and manual occupations no matter what they earn, and it still requires at least one genuine exempt duty rather than none. Plant engineers take a different road
A manufacturing or plant operations engineer usually does not reach the computer employee exemption, and the regulation says why: engineers and drafters whose work depends heavily on computer software, such as computer-aided design tools, are named as an excluded group precisely because using computers is not the same as analyzing and programming them. The route that normally fits is the learned professional exemption, which requires a primary duty of work needing advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, customarily acquired through a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. That is the legal reason the engineering degree requirement belongs in the posting rather than being treated as a nice-to-have. Technicians and operators supporting the role are typically non-exempt. Anyone outside the exemption needs hours tracked and overtime paid past forty in a week, and paying a salary does not change that. The Key-Person Risk You Are Hiring Into
A senior operations hire at a small company concentrates operational knowledge and access in one person faster than any other role. That concentration is the point, and it is also the risk you have to design against from the job description onward.
The failure mode is predictable. Systems get configured correctly but never documented, monitoring thresholds live in one person's judgment, the restore path is theoretically sound but untested, and the on-call rotation has a single name in it. None of that is visible while the person is present. All of it surfaces the week they are not.
