Every senior performance engineer job description on the internet was written by a company with a platform team. It assumes an observability budget, a service catalog, a load testing environment that already exists, and a hiring manager who has done performance work themselves. If you are a founder or an engineering lead at a small company, none of that is true for you, and copying that posting sets expectations you cannot meet in the first week.
The gap matters because this hire is unusual. Most engineering roles are evaluated by people who have done the job. Performance engineering usually is not, because the team is hiring the discipline precisely because nobody has it. That makes the job description do more work than normal: it has to describe the system honestly, name the problem, and set the bar without pretending to expertise the writer does not have.

Four Different Jobs Share This One Title
Performance engineer is a title covering at least four distinct jobs, and the posting fails when it tries to describe all of them at once. Decide which shape you need before you write a word, because the skill sets barely overlap past the first year of experience.
The deciding question is where your slowness lives. A team whose servers respond in 40 milliseconds while customers still call the product sluggish has a client problem, and hiring a database tuner will not fix it. Measure first, then write the posting for what the measurement says.
The generalist owner
Performance is nobody else’s job
One senior engineer owns speed across the whole product, from browser to database. This is the right shape for most small teams, because splitting the work needs more people than you have. It also demands the widest skill set on this page.
The test specialist
Load, stress, soak, spike
The job is a testing program: realistic user models, maintained scripts, a production-like environment, and reports engineers act on. It sits closest to quality engineering and often reports there rather than to platform.
The backend specialist
Tail latency and throughput
Service code, query plans, caching, queueing, and the interactions that only appear under load. Hire this shape when your slowness is measurably server-side and you already know which services are involved.
The client specialist
What the user actually feels
Load time, responsiveness, and smoothness on mid-range devices and slow networks. Hire this shape when your server responds quickly and customers still describe the product as slow, which is more common than teams expect.
Write the Posting Around the Problem You Have Today
The strongest recruiting asset a small team has is a concrete, interesting problem. Senior performance engineers choose work by the problem, not by the perks section. Checkout slows to eight seconds at peak. The mobile app takes eleven seconds to first render on a mid-range Android. A database migration must not regress p99 latency. Any one of those beats three paragraphs about a fast-moving culture, and it also tells the candidate whether they are the right specialist before either of you spends an hour on a call.
What the Posting Must Contain
A senior performance engineer posting does four jobs: it describes a system honestly enough for a specialist to judge, it filters people who have run scripts from people who have changed systems, it protects you legally, and it closes a candidate who has options. Most postings do only the first, badly.

What Actually Makes the Role Senior
Seniority in performance engineering is measured by how far a person carries a problem, not by years or by tool count. A mid-level engineer finds the bottleneck. A senior engineer decides which bottleneck is worth the engineering time, convinces the owning team, and proves the result afterward.
That distinction should be visible in the posting, because it changes who applies. Requirements written as tool familiarity attract keyword matches. Requirements written as owned outcomes attract people who have owned outcomes.

One more test worth applying: ask what the candidate chose not to optimize. Engineers who have carried performance work at senior level have a long list of things they deliberately left slow, and a reason for each. Engineers who have only reported findings usually do not.
Overtime, the Computer Employee Exemption, and On-Call
A senior performance engineer is almost always exempt from overtime under the FLSA computer employee exemption, which requires at least $684 per week on a salary basis or at least $27.63 per hour, plus a primary duty of systems analysis, design, development, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs.
That rule sits in the federal regulation on computer employees as exempt professionals, and the Wage and Hour Division explains its application in Fact Sheet 17E. The hourly alternative is unusual among the white-collar exemptions and it is the detail that matters most for contract engagements.
The computer employee exemption is the usual route
A senior performance engineer almost always qualifies as an exempt computer employee. The federal rule requires compensation of at least $684 per week on a salary basis, or at least $27.63 per hour if you pay hourly, plus a primary duty of systems analysis, design, development, documentation, testing, creation, or modification of computer systems or programs. Performance engineering sits squarely inside that description: analyzing systems, designing tests, modifying code and configuration to hit a target. The hourly alternative is unusual among the white-collar exemptions and it matters for contract work, because it means an hourly performance engineer above $27.63 can still be exempt if the duties fit. Duties decide it, not the word senior
Adding senior to a title changes nothing about classification. The Department of Labor is explicit that employees whose work merely depends on computers, rather than consisting of systems analysis and programming, do not fall under the computer employee exemption. That is the trap when you widen the role: if a performance engineer spends most of the week producing reports, coordinating vendors, or running scripted checks with no design judgment, the duties argument gets weaker. Write the posting around the analytical and engineering work, then staff it that way. On-call belongs in writing before the first incident
Performance work drifts toward production, and production drifts toward on-call. For an exempt engineer, on-call does not change the paycheck, which is exactly why teams leave the arrangement unwritten and then argue about it. Put the rotation, the frequency, the escalation path, and any stipend in the offer letter. If you also have non-exempt staff in the rotation, the rules are stricter: time an employee is required to remain on your premises or is so restricted that they cannot use the time for their own purposes is generally hours worked and must be paid and recorded. Bringing in a performance specialist for a launch or a migration is a good idea and a common misclassification risk. Independence turns on control and economic reality, not on the length of the engagement or the wording of the invoice. A genuine contractor runs their own business, serves other clients, works to a defined deliverable, and supplies their own tools. If you set the hours, direct the method, provide the laptop, and slot the person into standups like a member of staff, you have described an employee. What to Pay a Senior Performance Engineer
There is no federal occupation code for performance engineer, so no official median exists for the exact title. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track it, which means every figure you see attached to the title comes from private compensation surveys rather than government data.
Benchmark against the nearest classifications instead.
