The first appliance technician I ever watched get hired interviewed beautifully. He knew every brand, had an answer for every question, and started on a Monday. By Thursday of week three the shop had eaten three callbacks and a return trip for a control board that was never bad. He was not lying in the interview. He simply swapped parts instead of diagnosing, and nothing we asked him had been designed to catch that.

That is the whole problem with hiring for this trade. A confident talker and a real diagnostician sound identical for the first forty minutes, and most of the interview question lists on the internet are written for the candidate, not for you. This page is the other side of the table. Every question here comes with the reason it is worth asking and a note on what a good answer sounds like.

What to Assess in an Appliance Technician

Assess four things: diagnostic method, technical breadth, in-home conduct, and commercial judgment. Technical skill alone does not carry the job, because the technician spends the day alone in customers' homes, quoting work and deciding what to carry on the truck, with nobody watching any of it.

Diagnostic method is the one that pays for itself. A technician who measures before replacing turns one truck roll into one fix, while a parts swapper turns the same job into two visits, a returned part, and a customer who writes about it. You can test for this in a single question, and the answer is audible even to an owner who has never held a meter.

The other three matter in proportion to your work mix. Sealed system capability is the biggest single skill divide in the trade, so weight it heavily if you service refrigeration and lightly if you do laundry and cooking only. In-home conduct is non-negotiable everywhere, because it is what the customer actually reviews.

HOW TO USE THIS SET

This is the set you ask every appliance technician candidate, at every level.
It tests one thing above all: does this person diagnose, or does this person
guess. Ask 6 to 8 of these questions and use the "good answer" notes to judge
the answers even if you have never held a meter yourself. Score on the rubric
in Set 6.

QUESTIONS

1. Walk me through how you diagnose a dryer that runs but will not heat.
(Good answer: a sequence. Confirm the complaint, check power and the second
leg of 240V, then thermal fuse, thermostat, heating element, timer or board.
Tests with a meter rather than swapping parts.)
2. A washer will not drain. What do you check, and in what order?
(Good answer: starts with the cheap and likely cause, a clogged pump filter
or hose, before condemning the pump or the control board.)
3. Tell me about a fault you could not find on the first visit. What did you
do next?
(Good answer: describes going back to the basics, calling the tech line,
or reading the service manual. Owns the callback instead of blaming the
customer or the part.)
4. How do you use a multimeter to test a component for continuity, and what
reading tells you the part is bad?
(Good answer: can actually describe the procedure and the expected value,
not just name the tool.)
5. What do you do when the customer describes a problem that is not happening
while you are there?
(Good answer: asks when and how it happens, replicates conditions, checks
error codes and history in the control. Does not simply mark it no fault
found and leave.)
6. How do you find a wiring diagram and service information for a machine you
have never worked on?
(Good answer: knows the diagram is usually inside the machine, plus
manufacturer service portals, tech lines, and model or serial lookup.)
7. When do you decide a machine is not worth repairing?
(Good answer: compares the repair cost against the replacement cost and the
age of the unit, and says so plainly to the customer.)
8. What brands and product categories have you worked on most?
(Good answer: specific. Front load washers, sealed system refrigeration,
gas ranges, commercial foodservice, and so on, not "all of them".)

(Good answer: describes checking frost patterns on the evaporator, defrost
heater and thermostat operation, and evaporator inlet and outlet
temperature.)
6. Describe your process for recovering refrigerant before opening a system.
(Good answer: recovery machine and recovery cylinder, never venting.
Treats it as a legal requirement, not a preference.)
7. How do you evacuate and charge a system, and how do you know when the
evacuation is deep enough?
(Good answer: micron gauge and a decay test, not a stopwatch.)
8. Have you brazed a sealed system repair? Describe the last one.
(Good answer: specific about the leak, the joint, nitrogen purge, and how
they verified the repair held.)
9. What do you do if you find a leak you cannot reach without major
disassembly?
(Good answer: prices the labor honestly and gives the customer the repair
versus replace comparison.)

(Good answer: manuals, diagrams, video, asking a senior tech. A concrete
habit, not "I would figure it out".)
4. This job means driving to eight homes a day, alone, with your own schedule
to manage. How do you know that suits you?
(Good answer: has thought about it. Independence and route work are the
parts new technicians most often underestimate.)
5. Are you comfortable lifting and moving heavy appliances, working in tight
spaces, and being on your knees for part of the day?
(Ask about the essential functions of the job, not about health or medical
history.)
6. What are you hoping to be doing in three years?
(Good answer: mentions building a trade. Training a technician takes months
of paid ride-alongs, so intent to stay is worth real money to you.)
7. Do you have a driver's license and a record acceptable to an insurer?
(Ask this early. It is a hard requirement in most shops and it saves you
both time.)
8. Are you willing to earn EPA Section 608 certification, and how soon?
(Good answer: yes, and asks who pays for it. Many shops sponsor the test.)

(Good answer: specific, unflinching, and describes what changed afterward.)
6. How do you handle a warranty job where the manufacturer pays less than the
time it takes?
(Good answer: does the job properly and flags the pattern to the office

7. Have you worked flat rate or per call before? How did you handle a job that

(Good answer: understands that finishing properly protects the next call.
Watch for anyone who says they would leave it for someone else.)

How to Judge Answers If You Are Not a Technician

Judge the shape of the answer, not the vocabulary. A strong answer is a sequence that starts with the cheapest and most likely cause, contains a measurement, and ends with a decision. A weak answer names a part in the first sentence. That distinction is audible without any trade knowledge at all.

Walk me through how you diagnose a dryer that runs but will not heat.
Strong answer: A sequence, in order. Confirm what the customer actually sees, check that both legs of the 240V supply are present, then work the heat circuit: thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, high limit, element, and finally the timer or control. Measures each with a meter and states the expected reading. Mentions checking venting, because a blocked vent trips the fuse again next month.
Weak answer: Names a part immediately. A candidate who opens with I replace the thermal fuse has told you they swap parts until the machine works, which is the most expensive habit a technician can bring into your shop.
How do you tell a defrost fault from a sealed system fault?
Strong answer: Describes physical evidence: frost pattern on the evaporator, whether the coil is iced solid or clear, defrost heater and thermostat continuity, and the temperature difference across the evaporator inlet and outlet. Rules out fans and airflow before reaching for gauges, because opening a sealed system is the last step, not the first.
Weak answer: Goes straight to gauges and a charge. Adding refrigerant to a system that has not been diagnosed as leaking is both a technical mistake and a regulatory one.
You quoted $340 and it needs another part. What do you do?
Strong answer: Stops work and gets approval before spending more of the customer’s money, by phone to the customer or through the office, and explains the new total and why. Also gives the repair versus replace comparison if the number is now close to a new machine.
Weak answer: Finishes the job and presents the higher bill at the end, or decides for the customer that they would have approved it. This is the single most common source of chargebacks and bad reviews in appliance repair.
Tell me about a fault you could not find on the first visit.
Strong answer: Answers the question directly with a real job. Describes going back to basics, checking the service bulletin or calling the manufacturer tech line, and what they told the customer in the meantime. Owns the callback without blaming anyone.
Weak answer: Claims it has never happened. Every technician who has run a route has been beaten by a fault. A candidate who will not admit one will not tell you when they are stuck on your customer’s job either.

Two more signals are worth weighting heavily. The first is specificity about brands and categories: a candidate who says front load washers, gas ranges, and sealed system refrigeration is telling you something, while a candidate who says all of them is telling you nothing. The second is an admitted mistake, because every technician who has run a route has been beaten by a fault.

The Bench Test Beats the Conversation

Give every finalist a fifteen-minute bench test on a machine with a known, planted fault, and score the sequence rather than the fix. This single step catches what an hour of conversation misses, because a fluent candidate and a capable one diverge the moment they have to touch something.

Plant the same fault for every candidate
Pick something real and diagnosable in fifteen minutes: an open thermal fuse, a disconnected drain hose, a failed door switch. Use the identical fault for everyone so the comparison is fair.

Hand them a meter and stand back
Say only what a customer would say. Give them the complaint, not the symptom list, and then stop talking. What they ask you next is already data.

Watch the first three moves
Did they ask what the customer reported? Did they check power and the simple causes before the expensive ones? Did they look for the wiring diagram? The order tells you more than the outcome.

Score the sheet, not your impression
Use the bench test checklist in Set 6 and mark it while they work. Finding the fault is a bonus. Working a clean sequence is the hire.
Score the Sequence, Not the Answer
A candidate who works the right sequence and runs out of time is a better hire than one who guesses correctly in four minutes. The sequence repeats on every job for the next five years; the lucky guess does not. Keep the exercise the same length and the same fault for everyone, pay candidates for their time if the test runs long or touches real customer work, and never use a practical as an excuse for unpaid labor on a live job.

EPA 608 and What to Verify

Verify EPA Section 608 certification against the card, not the claim, for any candidate who will work on equipment containing refrigerant. Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, technicians who maintain, service, or repair such equipment must hold the appropriate certification type, and as the employer you are expected to keep the record.

The certification does not expire, which is why the interview question is which type rather than when did you renew. Ask to see the card, keep a copy on file at the place of business, and check the EPA Section 608 technician certification rules if your work mix is unusual. Factory authorizations and state gas licenses get the same treatment: ask for the document.

The technician drives a marked vehicle all day. Confirm the license and that the record will satisfy your insurer before you invest in an interview loop.
Background check consent
In-home work is the reason. Give the stand-alone written notice and get written authorization before you order the report, and follow the adverse action steps if it changes your decision.
Factory and state credentials
Manufacturer service authorizations, factory training certificates, and any state or local license for gas work. Ask for the document, not the claim.
