What to Assess in a Lab Assistant
Assess a lab assistant on five things: safety discipline, specimen handling and labeling accuracy, the ability to follow a written procedure exactly, equipment and inventory care, and reliability across shifts. Technical depth matters less here than in a technician role, because most of the actual technique is taught on your bench within a few weeks.
Two failure modes account for most of the damage a weak hire does. The first is an identity error: a sample labeled wrong, mixed up, or logged against the wrong request. The second is a safety shortcut, which is dangerous immediately rather than eventually. Both come from the same trait, a willingness to fill a gap with a guess rather than stop and ask.
That is why the best questions on this page are scenarios. Asking whether someone is detail-oriented gets you a yes from everyone. Asking what they would do with an unlabeled tube gets you a real answer in under ten seconds, and it is the same reason attention-to-detail questions work better as situations than as adjectives.

A strong answer has a sequence, a specific detail, and an escalation point. A weak answer has an adjective. That pattern holds across almost every question in this kit, and it is what lets an owner or office manager judge a lab candidate without running the bench themselves.
An unlabeled tube is sitting on the receiving bench. What do you do?
Strong answer: Refuses to guess. Does not label it from context, even when it is the only sample in the rack and the requisition seems obvious. Follows the rejection policy, isolates the sample, documents what happened, and asks for a recollection. A strong candidate treats identity as something you either know or do not.
Weak answer: Reasons their way to an identity: it must be the patient from room three, it was the only draw that hour. Confident, helpful, and exactly the habit that produces a wrong result attached to the wrong name.
Tell me about a time you made a mistake in the lab. What happened next?
Strong answer: Names a specific mistake, says how fast they reported it and to whom, describes the correction, and names what changed afterward. The willingness to say the uncomfortable part out loud in an interview is the same instinct that gets an error to you in an hour instead of a week.
Weak answer: Says they have never made a mistake, or produces a mistake so trivial it is a humblebrag, or shifts the blame to a coworker or a supervisor who did not train them properly.
You spill a tube of blood on the bench. Walk me through the next five minutes.
Strong answer: Gives a sequence: warn anyone nearby, check or put on PPE, contain the spill, use the spill kit and the right disinfectant for the right contact time, dispose of everything as biohazard waste, then report and document. The order and the contact time are what tell you they have really done it.
Weak answer: Talks about being careful and cleaning it up thoroughly, without a sequence, without a disinfectant, without waste separation, and without reporting it to anyone.
The most useful follow-up in the whole interview is some version of what happened next. A candidate with real bench time has an ending to the story: who they told, what got corrected, what changed. A candidate who is describing a job they mostly watched runs out of detail at exactly that point.
The Safety Questions That Matter Most
Ask safety questions as sequences, never as principles. Anyone can say they take safety seriously; only someone who has done the work can tell you what happens first, what happens second, and which disinfectant sits for how long. Four probes give you most of the signal.
Ask for the sequence
Safety questions are easy to answer in principle and hard to answer in order. Ask what happens first, then next. A candidate who has done it produces steps; one who has not produces adjectives.
Ask about waste streams
Biohazard, sharps, chemical, and regular trash are separated differently in every lab. A candidate who can describe the actual streams they used has worked somewhere with real controls.
Ask what an out-of-range reading means
A fridge log outside range or an instrument outside expected values is a decision point. You want someone who stops and escalates, not someone who reruns it until it looks normal.
Ask about the shortcut they saw
Every experienced lab worker has watched someone skip a step. What they did next tells you whether they will raise a problem on your bench or quietly work around it.
The Training Obligation Is Yours, Not the Candidate’s
If your work involves reasonably anticipated exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires a written exposure control plan, training at the time of initial assignment and at least annually afterward, and hepatitis B vaccination made available at no cost to the employee shortly after initial assignment. Hazard communication rules add labeling, safety data sheet access, and chemical-specific training. A candidate's previous training does not transfer. This is general information, not legal advice.
That obligation changes what the safety questions are for. You are not verifying a credential you can rely on; you are measuring how much of your own training will be review and whether the candidate has the instincts that training cannot install. Plan the first week around safety training either way.
Scope, Credentials, and What the Role Covers
Settle the scope of the job before you interview anyone, because it decides the pay band, the credential question, and half of your question list. The dividing line that matters is between pre-analytic support work and performing tests.
In a certified clinical laboratory, staff who perform moderate or high complexity testing must meet the personnel qualifications set out in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments regulations at 42 CFR Part 493, and a number of states license clinical laboratory personnel on top of the federal rules. An assistant limited to receiving, accessioning, centrifuging, storage, cleaning, and inventory generally sits outside those testing personnel requirements. Research, food, and environmental labs sit outside the clinical framework entirely.

Run the same interview for every candidate, in the same order, and write the scores down before you talk to anyone else about it. That is the entire method, and it is what separates a defensible decision from an impression of who seemed nicer.

Add a bench walk
Ten minutes on the floor tells you more than another question. Show them the receiving area and ask what they would check first.
If two people interview, each should score independently before the conversation starts. It takes an extra three minutes and it stops one strong impression from anchoring everyone else, which is the most common way a small hiring panel talks itself into the wrong candidate.
Fair, Legal, and Structured Interviewing
Asking the same job-related questions of every candidate is simultaneously the fairest, the most legally defensible, and the most accurate way to interview. Those three goals point in the same direction, which is convenient, because a small business rarely has time to optimize for them separately.
Lab hiring has one trap that other roles do not. Because the work involves chemical and biological exposure, it feels natural to ask about allergies, immune status, health conditions, or vaccination history. Those are medical inquiries and are off limits before a conditional offer. Describe the environmental demands of the job plainly instead, and ask whether the candidate can perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Structure Is Both the Fairer and the More Accurate Method
A structured interview, where every candidate answers the same questions scored against a consistent rubric, predicts on-the-job performance more reliably than an unstructured conversation. Asking the same job-related questions of everyone also keeps you inside the EEOC's rules against decisions based on protected characteristics.
Keep the small talk clear of age, family plans, national origin, and religion, and review the questions employers cannot ask before your first interview if you have not run one recently.
